It works!! Installed SSD in my iPod 4th Gen (Photo)

Heya guys,

Today is a great day. I am replying to my own forum question posted here:

It is my opinion that the iPod 4th generation (Photo and Mono) are the finest Apple Rockbox players ever (I have six of them in my closet), and yes, I like them far more than the 5th generation video and the 6th gen "classic."

Anyway, I got the "Compact-Flash CF SSD To Toshiba" adapter on ebay at a cost of about $2.00. Then my employer bought for me a 32 GB Transcend SSD. There were no instructions, so I winged it and install was super intuitive, and super easy. Just install the adapter and SSD face out, and then match the pins to the right. Took me perhaps ten minutes for install. Restore using iTunes. Reset using that stupid fire-wire plug-in. And to my relief iTunes worked, perfectly. 

Just downloaded and installed Rockbox. Now, I did not think this would work. And was borderline shocked --- that it worked perfectly. Easy as can be. Have been testing it now for about 30 minutes, and no problems. The unit feels lighter, and I know I will get better batter life, and need no longer worry about dropping my 4g, and instantly destroying the ZIFF.

Question I have is, are there reports anywhere on the iPod 4th gen working with an SSD? Just wondering the max size SSD I can upgrade to, and if I can upgrade even higher than that, and how.

Just ordered (OK, my employer just ordered) a 64 GB Transcend SSD and will install that when it arrives, probably next month. Expecting no problems (fingers crossed).

** Just a quick note that I used the Photo 60 GB, and assume it would work on the smaller 20 GB case, but have not tested it (yet).

Nope, there is no limit to how much storage Rockbox is willing to address.

I cannot speak for the Apple OF, but I would find it unlikely that it would throw a fit there either. Personally, I remove the OF entirely.
