Is RockBoy's choppy sound device-specific? (Ipod 6g, October 19 build)
« on: October 19, 2013, 03:35:58 PM »
I got my copy of rockbox from
http://download.rockbox.org/daily/ipod6g/rockbox-ipod6g.zip
on October 19, 2013.
and I have also tried it with the link listed as the latest development build:
http://build.rockbox.org/data/rockbox-ipod6g.zip
but have always had choppy, muffled (22 khZ?) sound to some degree. Here's an example when playing Pokemon Gold, recorded through my sound card:

FLAC, 11.7 MiB:

MP3, 2.3 MiB:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/67595621/crapsound.mp3

Does anyone know if this is device specific? I know that the Ipod 6g is currently listed as 'unusable' and so you may pull the 'not supported configuration' move on me. If so, I do (in this case) understand. But I'd like to know if other devices running rockbox have the same issues.

(also, if you would like help fixing this, I know a little about the game boy's hardware, if that info is useful.)

The iPod Classic is an absolute beast, it also happens to have one of the cleanest outputs of any Rockboxed device. It most definitely isn't struggling, even if you're making terrible use of the parametric EQ and and/or other processing effects available.

Being perfectly honest...I'm not sure how you can tell this is Rockbox specific issue. The tracks sound terrible on any device I throw them at.

I'm a bit puzzled.

It may be helpful to see your /.rockbox/config.cfg file just to make sure that there are no _really_ bad setting values or combinations thereof applied.

Erroneous reply due to misreading - disregard.

Its probably just not great emulation of the GB sound processor.  You'd have to look into the code to figure out if it can be done better.

I completely misread the title of this post.

Oy...

No, Rockboy's choppy sound isn't device-specific. It sounds bad on all players.

I initially read the title of this post (well, I say "initially", but it was multiple times in a row) as "Is Rockbox's choppy sound device-specific?", thinking you were listing to some form of re-encoded game audio file and that the example file(s) sounded good to you on every device *but* the Classic. Re-reading makes a lot more sense. Apologies.
