How does a totally blind person install Rockbox and its voice files?

:'( Hello. I am happy to say I found where to post a new topic, but I'm getting very discouraged because my husband, who is totally blind like myself, received the gift of a Sansa Clip + MP3 player from his twin sister, who is also totally blind.  She was the first one who told me that there was a program called Rockbox which a lot of totally blind users of the Sandisk MP3 players are able to install in order to make them more accessible.  I also understand that there is a company who will install Rockbox, and they also sell Sandisk MP3 players with it already installed.  However, since my husband had received his MP3 player out of the box from Amazon, Rockbox was not installed, so I thought I would take it upon myself to install it myself as I thought it would be a lot less time-consuming as well as a lot less expensive.  I followed the instructions according to the Rockbox manual, but it's not working.  I can't seem to get the OF to work.  I changed it to 01.01.35,  but I'm beginning to wonder if I'm missing something.  Shouldn't there be an OF for firmware versions that start 01.02?  If so, I have yet to find it.  If not, then I don't know what I'm doing wrong.  Everybody I talked to seems to have success in installing Rockbox but me, and I've been at it for almost three weeks and am getting discouraged.  I'd like to figure out what my problem is so that should I decide to get a Sandisk MP3 player I won't have this kind of problem.  I realize that I'll have to mannually install the utility, but is there anything I need to know about what key to press and hold for how long? Also, the firmware this particular MP3 player is running is Version 01.02.17A.  I'm looking forward to hearing from anyone who will be able to help me.  My Email address is included, but you may also reach me on Skype at diane.fisher37.  Thank you in advance, and again, I really do appreciate the assistance.  Last week I broke down and cried because I thought I broke his MP3 player, so it really would be nice to finally have a success storey.  Thanks again.

Hello,

I’ve had no bother installing it on numerous players for friends and family, my only issue arose when I tried using firmware for a Clip Zip on a clip+, and obviously that didn’t work.

The firmware version you use is irrelevant to Rockbox, the existing firmware on the player, whatever the version, is overwritten. So to get mine up and running, I simplye:

1.   Downloaded the firmware from the link on the wiki and extracted it to get a clpa.bin file.
2.   Downloaded the rockbox utility (it’s a zip file) and extracted it to the same folder.
3.   Plugged my player in whilst holding select, so it connects in the appropriate mode (i.e. has a drive letter assigned).
4.   Ran the utility, chose the drive, ensured bootloader and rockbox were selected, pressed install, chose my .bin and sat back.
Then I went to the accessibility tab of the utility to generate voice files, as I have better quality voices on my system than the pregenerated ones, and did that.  It took perhaps 10 minutes from start to finish and was a seemless process for me.

If there are specifics I can help you with, please don’t hesitate to ask!
