Sansa Clip+ Increase Charging Current
« on: October 13, 2013, 06:10:08 AM »
Hello everyone,...
I'm new here and i hope i make everything correct.

I upgrade the battery in my Sandisk Sansa Clip+ from 290mAh to 1Ah (with this camera battery: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B000F1TD2A/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).
Now the battery life is about four times higher than before :).
Now the problem is, that the charging current is about 170mAh so theoretic the Sansa needs about 7hours do charge.
But after some time it stop charging, i think there is a timeout and so i have to unplug the Sansa and plug it again to continue charging.

Now my idea is to increase the charing current.
I found in the datasheet https://shop.austriamicrosystems.com/eng/content/download/16763/295720/file/AS3525_Datasheet_v1_13.pdf/1814 on page 154
that there is a Charger Register and i can increase the current to 400mAh with the CHG_I flags.
Now my question is: Is that possible or are there same hardware components that doesn't support such a high current?
And how can i set this flags in the Charger Register, are there some configfiles or must i config the sourcecode and when where?

Thank you for your help!
Richard

ps: sorry for my bad english
pps: by the way,..such a long battery life is really amazing,..:)

Source code.  You can see all the commits that set the charging current for the AMS players here:

http://git.rockbox.org/?p=rockbox.git;a=history;f=firmware/target/arm/as3525/powermgmt-target.h;h=e0aa0ec4c395c460434370c16d1dab811952bcdc;hb=HEAD

It looks like you just need to set BATT_CHG_I  to CHG_I_420MA instead of CHG_I_140MA then recompile.

Please excuse my bad English:
I would also like to install a stronger battery in my Sansa Clip + and Clip Zip. Two questions:
The Amazon link to the 970mA battery is not right? The battery alone is 41x35x18mm in size and thus does not fit into the Clip + or Clip Zip. Which battery exactly did you take?
Can you explain exactly what you did to adjust the charging current to the battery stronger?
Thank you!

Vielen Dank!

Another question is whether it's such a good idea to subject a wee little 200 mAh battery to a 2C charge on a regular basis. I'm not sure what recommendations are for treatment of these little cells (are they LiIon or LiPo anyway?), but a 400 mA charge current seems like quite a lot.

400 ma into 1 ah is 0.4C which is fairly conservative for a modern battery.

The original settings were about 0.5C which should also be fine.

The battery is much much too large to go into the player, so you will have to attach it externally.

Have you thought about an external charger pack?  Like, say, http://www.amazon.com/PowerBot%C2%AE-Universal-External-FlashLight-Indicator/dp/B00EK6MIQO/ref=sr_1_20?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1388356129&sr=1-20 (or many many others, etc. etc.) - this is the way I would go... ijs...
