2 Questions about customization
« on: October 10, 2013, 10:55:11 AM »
Hi everyone!

I have been using Rockbox for some weeks now, and I am deeply impressed by what you guys have created.
Actually, I bought a Sansa Clip Plus JUST BECAUSE it can be used with RB.
I have changed some things, and worked my way through many of its options. I also have modified the "root menu order", which was a huge improvement for me.
1) What I would like to do now is modifiy the DATABASE menu order. The reason why: I ONLY use the "TRACK" option of the database, and as it is quite far at the bottom of the list, I would either like it to show up on top, or (if possible) make it the only available sort option available in the first place. Is there ANY chance to achieve this? For the "Files" menu, it is possible to choose a start path which is automatically opened - I did not find this option for the database. Otherwise it would be an option to automatically open the TRACK overview as soon as I open the database.

2) You might laugh at me for being lazy, but there is one other thing I would love to change: When I browse the "Files" menu and press the HOME button, it jumps to the main menu with "Now Playing" automatically highlighted. However, I would like it to highlight a different menu point (or simply the first one in the list, if that makes it easier). Is that possible in any way?

WHatever the solutions to those questions might be - even if they are a little more difficult or dangerous, don't hesitate to post them here. I might be able to figure it out in the end.

Thanks in advance for your feedback,
RBNB

I believe #1 can be done by editing the tagnavi files.  The different categories in the database are actually defined in a customizable text file.  See the wiki.

Changing how the buttons work will require you to dive into the code though, so #2 won't be easy.

Thank you for that awesome hint, saratoga! Consider #1 solved. You were completely right, it took some time for me to figure it out, but in the end it was incredibly simple to change the order of the database menu via the tagnavi.config file.
I'm sad to hear that #2 won't be as easy as that. Anyway, if you (or anyone) figure out a way how to do it, I'll be glad to try it out! I'm not at all skilled in working with code, therefore I'll probably never find the solution on my own.

Best,

Another thing: Does anyone know whether it is possible to also change the CONTEXT MENU order in a similar way?
I use the "set song rating" option very often, and I would like it to show up on top on my Sansa. As the menu is context-sensitive: I mean the menu I can access by holding the SELECT button in the WPS.

Thanks in advance,

The short answer is no.

To change the layout of the context menu one would need to set up a development environment, checkout the Rockbox git repository, compile the appropriate toolchain for your target device, edit the source, and then compile your own binary. These are all things myself or others will be happy to help you with.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Thank you for that quick reply [Saint], that already helps me out a lot: Now I know that it's actually useless to sweep the rockbox folder on my Sansa for the right file to change. It's good to know that there's nothing to find there ;-) I wouldn't have been able to tell that it is such a big difference to change the context menu as compared to the root or database menu.
I would need lots of help by you guys to accomplish that, as I neither know how to set up a development environment nor compile a toolchain. Realistically, as this is a matter of personal preference, I assume it wouldn't be worth the time that would have to be invested here! I'm sure there's much more important problems to be solved for everyone.

Again: thanks for your awesome work and help up to this point!
