unrockboxable Clip+
« on: October 10, 2013, 03:18:52 AM »
Hey there,
been using a rockboxed Clip+ for years and it died on me, so I got me a shiny new one!

Rockboxed it, worked fine for like an hour, then it showed display errors: flickering and switching lines.
Booted original Firmware (V01.02.18P), worked fine.
So I removed Rockbox again, as expected, now the original Firmware showed up again and is working fine.

Now I wanted to try anothe, fresh, install of Rockbox. Utility ran through without errors. But upon boot the screen stays black. I can turn it off, and boot into the original Firmware with Home+Power which works fine. Turn it off and on again without Home Button to boot Rock box, screen stays black again.
I removed Rockbox again and retried another install, same effect, black screen in Rockbox, original Firmware boots and works.

So, what can I do? I can't stand using the original Firmware, I need Rockbox in order to use that player witout Magnifying glasses (got very bad eyesight...)

Thank you so much in advance for helping me on this issue!

I tried a manual install today, same thing as before but for a second after the reboot I saw the RockBox Screen before it went black again and stayed that way until I reflashed it to its original Firmware again.
Could it be that Device is in some way broken and the Sansa Firmware can compensate for that?
Should I try older Firmwares?
It really pains me that I don't get that thingy working right...

You can always try reformatting the device. That is the only thing that comes to mind. Hope this helps!

...try reformatting the device...
Just formatt it to FAT32 in Windows Diskmanager or just FAT?
What if I use Linux, there is only one option for FAT/32 but which bootsector would I write? Dos/W95 16/W95 32? After formatting first put a original Imgage on it an then rockbox it or rockbox it right after formatting it, leaving it without the original Firmware?

I had a similar problem a few days ago.
The rockbox load go stuck on DB update. When I deleted the DB files (Using a computer) It didn't load at all (Black Screen)
All the time the OF worked fine (as much a the sansa OF can work fine :))

This is what did to fix it:
  • Remove the external SD card if you have one
  • Connect the clip+ to an Ubuntu running computer
  • Unmount the clip+
  • Enter Applications->Accessories->Disk Utility
  • Select the clip+ and click "Format Drive"
  • In "Scheme" choose "Master Boot Record" and click format
  • In the main Disc Utility screen click "Format Volume". Make sure the clip+ is selected
  • In type choose FAT, in name write SANSA CLIP and click format
  • Mount the clip+ again
  • Write the most resent OF to the clip+, unmount and disconnect it
  • If the OF loads successfully, install the latest stable realease of rockbox using the utility

I know this may be a bit too detailed but hope it will work for you.
Note that this work with my clip+ and I'm not sure we have the same model or the same problem, so be carefull in what you do so you don't damage your device.

Good Luck

Tryed formatting it. First try, after format, reflash OF then Rockbox it, it came back with a flickering rockbox, which lasted for one boot, after that, blank again. Second time I tryed not only formatting, but actually zeroing out the whole thing. It came back online (after reflash OF, rockbox it) with the rockbox screen upside down! But that too only lasted for one boot after which it went back to blank again.
Maybe I'll somehow try to return that device and give another one another try, but maybe I'll get that same Modell again... It seems to me, that either this device is defective an OF compensates for that or they have another hardware line (yet?) unknown to rockbox, either way too bad for me...

Returned the Device and got a new one.

Upgraded OF, Rockboxed it, everthing works just fine, as it should be.

Finally...
