how to make all songs play at the same volume?

Hi All,
First let me say sorry for asking a question that has probably been answered. I have read through the manual but I really don't understand all the sound options even after reading the manual. I thought I understood that replaygain would achieve this. I made sure that EQ was enabled and set replaygain to track. I still find that songs are louder and quieter than others and have had ringing in my ears a few times as a result.
Please be patient and help a newbie out. I am using sansa clip zip on rockbox 3.13. Optimum sound settings for this player would also be appreciated, although I know it's down to personal preference I would like to have the best sound possible using the settings.
Thanks.

You need to make sure that the tracks' metadata actually contains replay gain values. If they don't, or if some of them don't, then you could visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_gain and see the section "Scanners" and choose a Replay Gain scanner to use. If you use Windows on your PC I expect most people will recommend foobar2000 or Winamp to perform this task, both being well liked and gratis. Scan all your files and they should then all play back at similar perceived loudness, no more surprises.
There is no need to do anything in particular to achieve "optimum" sound. Some people like to use a crossfeed with headphones, some people like to use some eq to compensate for characteristics of specific headphones and so on but basically your Clip running Rockbox is going to play typical audio files back as well as the hardware allows. Beyond that are matters of taste, preference and habit.

Thanks! No wonder it wasn't working. Is now though. If anyone is interested I used Musicbee to tag files.
