ipod classic (thick) 160gb, cannot play any songs

(1/1)

laz0rama:
i am very new to rockbox, so please bear with me while i learn.

i have installed rockbox with the emcore fimware. took me a while to get it all working, but that all seems to be fine. rockbox boots up and i get the rockbox menu.

i have copied a few music files (mp3 and wav) to some subdirectories on the ipod. using the rockbox menu, i select "files", i navigate to the file i want to play, and i hit the select button. i see the "loading" message for a moment, and then i get this error:

"undefined instruction at 0810f93c"

and i can do nothing at that point except reboot.

anyone have thoughts on this particular issue? i know the ipod classic version of rockbox is not supposed to be fully functional, but i doubt playing a song is one of the messing features. ;-)

also, i should mention that when i try to initialize the database, it never seems to work. not sure what that is about, or even what the difference is between using files and the database.

any insights would be greatly appreciated.  thanks in advance!

Please try updating the Rockbox binary with a current development build and report back if problems persist.

In this case, it may be advisable to completely remove the /.rockbox directory prior to extracting the new Rockbox build to the device to ensure that no corrupt files are present which could affect the new build in any way.

The File Browser in Rockbox is exactly what the name suggests it is, it allows you to browse the entire content of the filesystem (depending on the "Show Files" setting).

The Database only shows audio files, and only the metadata thereof. This allows you to do things that the File Browser cannot, such as sorting by year, genre, composer, etc... However, the Database is only as useful as your metadata is complete. So if you have badly tagged files, or files with no metadata whatsoever, the Database will be pretty much useless to you.

The Database is particularly handy for iPods which have audio files synced via iTunes, as it allows the user to browse the contents of the device in a way that the File Browser would no, as iTunes obfuscates the file names during sync. I understand that this isn't particularly useful for an owner of a Rockboxed iPod Classic, though, as there is (currently) no dual-boot support and the device is formatted during emCORE installation.
