Hold Switch Lock Stuck in the "ON" Position iPod Photo
« on: August 21, 2013, 05:48:44 AM »
iPod Photo A1099 60gb

Hold Switch Lock Button stuck in the "LOCKED" Position from the units software not the mechanical switch.

Turn HOLD switch "ON" and iPod turns ON
Turn HOLD switch "OFF" and iPod turns OFF (It will completely die as if the battery has been unplugged).

I tried swapping and or replacing the following with known working components:
1. Hold/Audio/Headphone Jack Assembly
2. Logicboard: Apple Part No. 820-1764-A
3. Hard Drive: 60gb and 40gb
4. New Battery
5. Waiting for a new clickwheel [Pending]

Obviously since the unit is locked the clickwheel won't function.

Device shows up as Drive (F) Windows 7 64bit
Syncs with iTunes
Can be restored
Music and or Photo's can be written to disk

I had Rockbox installed and it worked perfectly.
I switched back to Apple Firmware, put Hold Switch "ON" and thus began my dilemma.
Then I did a Restore from iTunes, same problem.
I installed Rockbox again successfully, but the iPod is on the "Language" screen as you would see after a restore and still in the "LOCKED" Position.
The ".rockbox" folder is on the hard drive.

I'm wondering if I can go into the "iPod_Control" files and "UNLOCK" it from there?

This is probably a failure in the clickwheel, and not the hold switch. You've replaced everything else. Also, the fact the iPod loses power might mean there is an electrical short in the clickwheel because clickwheel power is probably turned off while hold is on.

Received the clickwheel today. Indeed this was the culprit. All functions working properly now. Thank you for the reply dreamlayers.
