Clip Zip Battery Replacement
« on: August 21, 2013, 07:09:53 PM »
Hi. Does anyone know what type of battery to buy and a procedure to open the case and do the replacement.
Or better still, a higher capacity battery that will fit? Maybe a 6th gen Nano batt?

I'm not sure if an iPod battery will work. It's possible. Rumour has it that one of the iPod batteries worked in the original Clip, so maybe Sansa hasn't changed the battery and you could get lucky.  Unfortunately, if you find a battery, you'll need to solder it in place, as the Clip Zip wasn't designed for battery replacement and the battery is soldered to the mainboard.

If the case on the Zip follows earlier Clip designs, you should be able to (gently!) pop it open with a guitar pick or a nylon opening tool along the case seam. The battery should be just behind the clip.

Please understand this is all speculation based on previous Clip models--I'd rather not open my Clip Zip just yet!

All you need to open the casing is a very thin yet strong blade, I use a table knife. Push the blade's edge (not the tip!) into the slit between the two parts of the casing. Then gently yet firmly tilt the blade and the fasteners will release. Perform that in few points of the slit, e.g. at the corners. It is difficult not to leave any scratches or deformations, though. In order to replace the battery you need to solder three thin wires. The battery is glued to the chip pretty strongly.
I don't know much about the battery itself, maybe you'll find something useful here.
