Mpeg Player - Improving FPS
(1/1)
TorenRenne:
I have repaired a broken iPod Video which was given to me by a family member. I hate Apple, so installed Rockbox when I found out how! :D
My query is regarding to video playback. The MPEGplayer page states that:
--- Quote ---NOTE: MPEGplayer does all video and audio decoding using your device's main CPU. It does not use any special video decoding hardware such as the Broadcom Video Processor found in the iPod Video. MPEGplayer therefore performs very badly on such devices in comparison with the manufacturer's original firmware.
--- End quote ---
Which means it performs with a low FPS. Is it possible to make the Mpegplayer utilise the Broadcom Video Processor to improve the performance? I realise its a specific request for this model, but it seems like a worthwhile edit for anyone running the iPod Video.
I haven't run a video on rockbox yet as I need to convert some first!

Nobody has any documentation for the video chip. Someone would have to reverse engineer how to use it from the original firmware's code. This is a large and tedious task and nobody has bothered; so unless you're going to do it yourself, this is unlikely to happen.
TorenRenne:
Ah bugger.
Thanks for the response, bit of a shame. I guessed there was a reason it hadn't already been done.
I know some programming but not to the level required though.
I just thought if others have come across this, it may already have been done and I just hadn't found it.
