Ipod 120gb - Fedora Core 19 - Amarok - HELP!?!?!?!?!?!
« on: July 30, 2013, 06:00:57 PM »
Hi peeps...

finally sorted my iPod classic out... install seemed pretty straight forward...

only problem is now is I can't get any music on it... :D

When I plug it in i get the think at the bottom asking me to  open with vlc media player - which i can't change...

an IPod device configuration screen come up asking for names and model no.s etc... also states
Code: [Select]
Couldn't find an iPod database on /run/media/shugs81/iPodClassic

states above issue prevents amarok from using the iPod... which is fair enough... I click on the initialize iPod button which fixes this... No Dice...
Code: [Select]
Failed to write SysInfo: Device directory does not exist

I get why it says directory not found etc... i thought rockbox made the iPod forget it was an iPod??? i.e. just effectively gets recognized as a hard drive...

anyhow... fun doesn't stop there!!!

when I open it in dolphin (file browser for gnome 3...) it states contains music and has a vlc button in the top... the directory is empty and when you click on any of the vlc player buttons it just come up empty...

the iPod is also recognized in Amarok but shows empty... which is good... but then I can't copy anything to it... which i believe is something to do with the earlier issues stated....

When i unplug the iPod... i spotted the database thing... when I click on it it says
Code: [Select]
Building Databas... 289 found (PREV to return)
what does that do? and what is it finding?

The files option shows nothing on the iPod

Playlist catalogue shows /./Playlists doesn't exist

games - what?? why are they there? where are they? will they take up valuable space or are they in the sneaky partition? can i remove them?

I also had a look in the dev info ( :o )
Code: [Select]
Database Info
   Initialized: Yes
   DB Ready: No
   Progress: 86% (289 Entries)
is this a problem?

All in all... have i just screwed my iPod? has the installation gone wrong? if need be is there a way to *shudder* restore it to appleness? can i just reinstall everything to make it work? am i just not using it right?

help please!! :D I'm soooo nearly windows free i can taste it!! :D

Does the ipod successfully mount at a readable/writeable device on your PC?

The database lists all the files its scanned, including several hundred system files.

The problem with Amarok here isn't so easy to fix. Basically, it (rightfully) expects to be able to talk to the device as an iPod after it sees a device with a specific V/PID.

Macs do this as well. As do most car head units. Its a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It sees an iPod and expects to be able to "talk iPod" to it.

A problem comes from that, with the iPod Classic in particular, when Rockboxed for all intents and purposes it is no longer an iPod - the original firmware is completely removed and dual-boot isn't (currently) possible (this can also be done with some(all?) of the other iPod ports with an advanced ipodpatcher install method, but it is not the default installation route). Some other iPod ports have limited support for the iPod Accessory Protocol, and will function at least partially with some car head units and iPod accessories - but the Classic (at least currently) does not.

The right way to fix this has been discussed a few times, and it basically involves rockbox getting its own V/PIDs to use, ideally one per device, and allowing the user to choose what the device presents itself as. Getting a block large enough to cover current and future devices shouldn't be problematic. I am unsure what the current status of this is however.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

cheers for the help guys...

it does work but I'm thinking i've misunderstood how rockbox works... as I was hoping to use amarok to manage the music on it.

I can copy stuff onto it like a harddrive and it finds the track but there's no playcount or lyrics or anything on there, and I've no idea how to do it... I'll have a bit more of a play and see if I can get any more info
