Ipod Video 5.5 Gen Video Problems

(1/2) > >>

mrfritzle:
Hello,

i have a Ipod Video 5.5Gen, and it looks like the Video Chip is broken.

Everything works fine, except watching mp4 (Original from the Store and self encoded) movies under Ipod-OS.

Now i think to replace it, but iam not sure where which part to replace.

Is the Video Chip on the logic board ?

Thx for answers !!! Big Greetings from Germany

P.S: I tried a lot Firmware 1.2.1/1.2.3/1.3 , change HDD to CF. Restored it a 100 hundred times. Any Idea ?

As you suspect, the chip does indeed reside on the logic board.

You cannot buy this component separately, so you would need to acquire another logic board, preferably one in working order, as you would need specialized (read as: quite expensive) equipment to remove the chip(s - both old logic board and new) and remount it.

It would be a lot easier to buy a new logic board and replace the whole thing.

In saying that, if you stopped using the Apple firmware, this wouldn't be an issue, since Rockbox doesn't use this component at all ;)

Hi Saint,

thx for the answer!

I've read alot about the logic board in the internet and now i think should go for:

820-1765-A   ...,because I have a 128 GB CF and not sure if it works with 820-1763-A

There should be a difference with the RAM 64 MB or 32 MB. Is it possible, to see it in part code or is it luck ?
Will the RAM make a difference for using Rockbox ?
Is there a option in Rockbox to see the RAM Size of the logic board ?

...and honestly they are very expensive. Maybe iam looking for an damage Ipod on ebay :)

Check the audio buffer size in the debug screen. If it's more than 32MB  (probably 57 or so), it's a 64MB model.

More RAM will provide slightly better runtime, due to the disk being accessed less often for buffering. With a CF card that's going to be less important though.

The "video chip" is also the display controller; if it was broken you probably wouldn't be able to use the screen at all..
