Rockboxed Sansa Clip Zip RB 3.13 USB not working
« on: July 12, 2013, 07:17:06 AM »
Hello, recently I have noticed that when i plug my Sansa to PC the device doesn't appear in Windows Explorer so I can't open it. Player screen shows that it has been connected to PC and has no error messages. The funny thing is that I can see player being connected to USB port by using USBview (http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Utilities.htm). So everything is fine with USB ports and such but my computer just fails to recognise Sansa. Could this be somehow driver related issue or something else could be the problem?

Try holding down the Home button before plugging in the USB.  This will boot the device into the original Sansa firmware.

I have loads of problems using the rockbox USB driver.  I've mentioned in tons of times on here, but it never seems to get fixed.

Sometimes it crashed without notice, i.e. the usb icon remains on the screen so it looks like it;s still running....but it isn't.

Hold down the power button until it shuts off and try again.

I've found that it's always unstable, but more likely to crash with a full or nearly empty charge.

Also, I think that having a sd card in the slot increases the likelihood of failure.

Agreed, this is rather disappointing as otherwise Rockbox runs really well on this target.

I noticed that some custom themes can crash your player constantly when you activate an USB mode.

Its worth noting that this is (besides the crash, obviously) entirely expected.

The USB screen shows when USB is detected, it needn't be mounted.

So, don't think of the USB screen as indicating "player is mounted and USB is in use", think of it as "player can see USB is connected" (a really good example of this is some iPods thinking that wall chargers are USB connections). For example, if you eject the device but leave it connected...the USB screen stays, because it is still connected to USB.

Windows usually automatically mounts drives. But I also know that sometimes Windows Explorer has a weird glitch that cause do not show already mounted a new attached disk, especially in Windows XP. But other file managers shows these disks without an issue. Without a help of other file managers you can run another proccess of Windows Explorer with additional parameter - "explorer.exe /separate". It's run a new process and don't inherit a glitches of previous already runned Windows Explorer.

...I am completely lost as to how that relates to my response.

All I way saying is that in Rockbox, showing the USB screen doesn't necessarily mean the device is mounted or there's an active data connection.

Yeah, cos you mentioning it was all that was needed.

We know there are USB problems.  They aren't easy to fix.  Somebody with the skills and the time needs to undertake some difficult and laborious work to try and figure out what the problem is.  It isn't just a case of you being ignored, believe it or not.

I have tried the last solution presented by dunkelheit, and the sansa doesn't hang, it can give access to the Micro USB, and it hides the internal storage, but I have it already full, so no problem, I have a 32 Gigs memory card.

Also, if you turn off your device, and plug it on the usb of your computer, you will have higher changes of accessing your Micro SD card, and experiencing less problems with this.

Hey, I have the same damn issue with my clip zip.  it's a 4gb model (has refurb stamped on the bottom but so far everything works fine other than rockbox usb).  When I first got it, I immediately installed rockbox with the utility, and copied a few tracks over to test it out.  I've been using the BBW theme from the get go as I thought it looked the best (Scroll bars and icons disabled if that matters).  There were no problems at all with it as of yet.  I'm a bit OCD on stuff and I didn't like the ##music# and ##port# taking up space and showing up in the file browser and another thread mentioned that those files will be created automatically when you boot to original firmware.   I never planned on doing so so I deleted those files after first copying said folders to the desktop.  That is when all the problems began.  Rockbox was giving me the unidentified instructions error and rebooting, getting stuck at the USB screen and needing to be rebooted, or simply giving an error within rockbox saying something about playlist control file (can't remember the exact syntax on that one, sorry).

I've reformatted the device, flashed the 1.01.20 firmware again, factory reset, installed rockbox fresh, and still have the same problems.  It works fine to access USB on original firmware, and as this software is free I can't really complain, just adding as much detail as I can to help identify the problem.

Also, sometimes when the drive can't be accessed, it hangs the windows explorer and eventually requires a reboot (which admittedly could be a configuration problem on my PC's end)

in short, rockbox usb no bueno, original firmware no problemo.

Today I saw a sandisk 8 gigs on amazon lighting deals of just 27 £, amazing deal, fortunately I already have one, is there a limit for the Micro SD, I have one 32 gigs, I want to upgrade it to 64, is it compatible?

Works for me with a 64GB card.  I have one 64GB card in the player, another on tiny USB adapter tethered to the player, plus the 8GB gives me a total of 136GB...

Note, there is supposedly some kind of USB bug for Clip Zip, that supposedly is theme related (happens with some themes more than others?) but I'm not sure what is going on with it, but from what I read in other threads, it might be worth trying say the failsafe theme and see if USB crashes still happen...  I have also seen weird crash errors, but, mostly I manipulate the 64GB cards externally, not the internal with a cable, so I don't care too much...
