Before installation
« on: June 29, 2013, 05:00:20 PM »
Hello all,

I just get a Scandisk Zip and discover Rockbox.
The original firmware would fit me but the display isn't reliable.
For example, I loaded in "Music" two files named "artistname1" and "artistname2" with a serie of MP3 inside each.
The file "artistname1" is displaid correctly but the other is displaid "unknown".
The file "artistname1" is splitted in three sub files call "integro" so I have to dig into these to get my MP3.
And for the second file name "unknown"  the order of the numbered songs isn't respected.
I don't understand why, all this is weird to me.
I had a Sony radio/mp3 before and encountered the same problems.

Would Rockbox be better in that respect ?
Thanks for your answers

Rockbox has a file browser if that's what you're looking for.

By the way consider formatting your posts into sentences and paragraphs. Its easier for other people to read it that way.

Sorry for the formatting, I thought it was ok that way.

I can also browse with the original firmware, the problem is the way it records the files I load in, it doesn't respect the files names and sometimes split them.

I rather suspect you are confusing the File Browser with the Database, both have similar, yet slightly different functions.

The File Browser will display the file and folder layout as it appears on the disc. Whereas the Database will display the metadata of the files it finds, so if the tags are incorrect, or missing, you will get odd results.

Saint, you are most probably right, that would explain Saratoga's answer, so the screen would oddly display the database and there shouldn't be any browser, am I correct ?

So I guess I have to install Rockbox, do I have to format before, to avoid conflict between original firmware and Rockbox? I haven't seen it mentioned in the manual, though I admit I haven't read it entirely yet.

OK now I understand so for those who asked themselves the same questions here is the answer :

Before loading any song you must well prepare your files and folders. I am speaking for Windows here.
You must get into the properties of each file (right clic on the file > properties > details tab and fill up correctly all the lines artist name, artist album etc...
As for the folders properties, make sure they aren't hidden.

Thanks to both of you , you put me on track.

I am sorry, I misread your post...I assumed that you already had Rockbox installed. My mistake.

I cannot tell you at all how the original firmware is supposed to act. I have no idea, although I have this device I have never used it, nor laid eyes on the original firmware. The answer I gave previously is how Rockbox will behave, but the same is almost certainly true for any firmware the displays the metadata of the files instead of the filenames and directory structure. Rockbox just happens to do both.

A little side note regarding:

There are applications that exist that can automate this process for you. If you have been tagging by hand, I feel for you. Checking out the above link might make you feel a lot better about this process.

Oh! Yes I am tagging by hand... ??? So your link to Picard is going to be helpful even though I just try it and it freeze my system, I will get back to it some other time.

Back to my question, do I need to format before installing Rockbox ?

No, you do not.

The Rockbox manual for your device describes installation (and everything else) in detail.
