Unable to get rockbox/iriver firmware working on Iriver H140
« on: June 26, 2013, 07:10:31 PM »
Hi All!  I decided to format the HDD on my H140 because I was seeing files come up even after I deleted them from the drive (yup, I even ran the scan under system so the drive was updated) and still, the damn music files I deleted were coming up.

Anyway, so I formatted the drive and downloaded the rockbox utility and I grabbed the hex file off the net.  When I get to the pop up box telling me to update the iriver's firmware using it's update functionality...well, I can't do it.   When I boot to the iriver's firmware, upon hitting the knob inward, I get a screen where I see some korean (or japanese) text and I can't navigate the screen anywhere from here.  I see two small folders on the far left side and one them is called Files, but I'm totally stuck.   Can anyone provide any tips?  I'm sure I'm missing something really simple.

tia!

Is the Iriver firmware working by itself? I don't understand where you've managed to end up exactly. Have you already managed to flash an updated firmware to your player, and which? Also, did you have installed Rockbox before?

Thanks for replying back, my H180 is still stuck in limbo.  Yes, the iriver firmware works.  Following the steps from the utility, I get stuck at how to upgrade the iriver's firmware.   The manual states to go to iriver's website, but it no longer has any of the H140 firmware files.  I went to http://rasher.dk/rockbox/iriver-firmwares/ and grabbed 1.66 US (hex file) and dropped it in the iriver and tried to run the firmware update on the iriver and nothing happens.  So, what am I doing wrong at this point?

Thanks in advance if you can provide any pointers on how to complete the installation.  I won't be formatting the drive, ever again  :o

edit.  yup, I have had rockbox on this player for years with no issues.  Just needed to format the HDD because it was acting up (not deleting files off even after holding the toggle down somewhere in a system menu screen to remove the files off the drive permanently).

Then you don't need to install the bootloader again (i.e. do the firmware upgrade thing). Just install Rockbox (but not its bootloader) and things should "just work". The Rockbox bootloader will start the Iriver firmware if it doesn't find a Rockbox installation.

Cool.  I'll try it this weekend and report back.  Thanks for taking the time to reply back!

I just tried installing rockbox, it's on the player, but upon booting up into rockbox it still gets stuck at the first screen (shows bootloader v6, battery life) and it just hangs.

Any ideas?

GOT IT!  After reading this thread:  http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=29476.0

I formatted the drive to fat32 and bam, rockbox worked fine.  This should definitely be a standard thing mentioned in the rockbox utility, unless I missed it somewhere.   :)

Hmm, how? Rockbox Utility doesn't format the player so the only thing it can do is to assume you haven't reformatted the player with a wrong filesystem. Though the current development version of Rockbox Utility will do some filtering based on the filesystem. I guess exfat needs some handling there as well.

I used this program:  http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

I had the drive formatted to NTFS and that was a no-go apparently.  Once I formatted it to fat32 rockbox installed and booted up right up with no issues.  I didn't try exFat, so I can't speak for it.
