Interface for blind
« on: June 25, 2013, 06:18:13 AM »
Hi!
A few days ago I fell on my brand new Sansa Clip+ and I broke the screen. I enabled the talk menu and I am still using it, but there are a lot of things that I can't do any more because of the interface. I have to generate manually talk files to understand what I am listening to, there is no way to know the time, I have to wait for the battery to fell to 10% to know its state and it's hard to know useful information. So there could be a more minimalistic interface, with disabled screen for blind people and people with the same problem as mine.
Also I am eager to do it myself if no one can't, I just need somebody to show me the way. I am very familiar with c and c++.
 Thanks!

Hello, BeerFlask. Welcome to Rockbox!

I have a solution to not knowing how much battery you have, although it might bit be exactly what you are looking for. You can find out how much battery is available by into the Main Screen. From there, go into System, and select Rockbox Info. When you do this, there will be a batter percentage/remaining time indicator, which will be the first option (hence it will be selected, and read out loud by default).

Hello,

I’ve never used Rockbox with any sight but still find it very good.  One other thing I have done is replace quickscreen with shortcuts.  In my shortcuts menu I have an item to hear current time, as well as a few sleep timer settings.

I also have the player set to resume on startup, and a windows executable on the root of my player I run whenever I paste in any new content to generate .talk clips.

My one wish would be a shortcut option to hear battery level, as it’s very quick to listen to the time and it’d be nice to do the same rather than having to go through the menus. Also, of course having text-to-speech on the player itself would be nice for metadata view and that sort of thing, but personally I’m not so bothered about that.  I use a clip, you can get a 4GB for about £15 in the UK and expand infinitely with memory cards so for me it’s a very cheap and powerful option.

Hello.  I May be in the wrong part of the forum, but as this is the closest topic to what I'm looking for, I need someone to tell me how to install Rockbox to my husband's Sansa Clip + which was sent to him by his sister who has no savvy whatsoever when it comes to installing interfaces to MP3 players and is totally blind.  We're also both totally blind and I'm the one who knows a little more about installing the program, or I thought I did, but I'm having trouble changing the firmware so it will work.  I will say that his Sansa Clip + is currently running the firmware version 01.02.17A.  The only OF seems to be 01.01.35, and for the life of me I can't seem to get it installed, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.  The laptop I'm using runs Windows XP, and when I first tried installing the Rockbox Utility, I made the mistake of installing it to my hard drive where it said to change the mode from USB to MSC, which I did.  Then when I checked the Rockbox manual, it said to install it on the player itself.  So I did that, and that's when I found out I needed to get the Original Firmware file, which I assumed was Version 01.01.35 because the manual said that if the version number started with 01 that was the one I needed.  I even changed the OF from M300A to 01.01.35 and nothing seems to be working.  It's been over a week, and my husband and I are getting discouraged.  I wrote last week but I may have written to the wrong topic.  I don't know how to start a brand new topic, so I thought I would reply to this thread since I imagine you installed Rockbox before you broke your screen. I would have to manually install everything, but am I to understand I need sighted assistance even to do that part?  I was kind of hoping not, but I do need to find something out since I've been able to do nothing since I started this whole project.  Please could someone help me? I'd like to get my husband's MP3 player talking for him soon so he can enjoy it.  Also when I get one of my own I want to install Rockbox to it without having to spend the time ore the money getting one with Rockbox already installed on it. If someone could help me I'd be eternally grateful.  Thank you in advance.
