RockBox album cover appearing white'ish

The file I was trying to use as a backdrop for the menus is a very dark figure fading onto a black background. It's a BMP file I resized to 96x96 (the native resolution of the Zip) so no resizing is done by Rockbox. However the figure appears very bright on the screen of the Clip Zip, the edges are very clearly defined, with a high difference in brightness between "pitch black" and "very-nearly-black gray".
Yet on a computer the screen dumps look the same as the original image (black and dark gray look nearly the same brightness), so the bug must be in the OLED screen or its driver...

That's the screen's fault. The difference between black and the darkest shade of grey is ridiculous. Dark shades of grey also have a greenish hue. Happens in the original firmware as well.

I did some experimenting today.
Left is a 400x400 image resized by Rockbox to 47x47. On the right the same image resized with the bicubic algorithm of a popular image manipulation software - as displayed by Rockbox (i.e. dithered down to 16 bit).
The dark areas in the one that Rockboxed resized do seem to have a slightly lighter hue (nowhere near as light as the covers posted earlier in this thread, though). Some of the lightness is caused by dithering down to 16bit. The 24bit version looked a bit darker. The rest I'm not so sure about. The bicubic algorithm might have increased the contrast a bit. It certainly made the right image look a lot sharper. Looks great on target.
