24bit 96kHz flac files skip constantly on 4th gen ipod photo <<<SOLVED>>>
« on: May 17, 2013, 09:40:27 PM »
Hello Rockbox community,

this is my first post, so excuse me if it's not in the right place.

I finally got around to installing Rockbox on my ipods 3rd gen 40gb and 4th gen 20gb and feel like a fool for not doing it years ago!

the problem i'm having is that when i try to play 24bit 96kHz flac files on my 4th gen ipod photo it can't play for more than 5 seconds without skipping! It kind of feels like when you try to stream video off the internet and it buffers all the time due to not enough bandwidth.

I would have put it down to the ridiculously high kb/s of a 24 bit flac, BUT i bought a iriver H140 especially to put rockbox on and this plays the same 24bit 96kHz files without problem!

I've only just tried this out tonight and i don't have my 3rd gen ipod to hand to try them out on, so it may just be down to the fact that i have a duff ipod!

Any feedback gratefully accepted!

Get a faster player, turn off things like eq, or don't use such needlessly high sample rates.

Fair enough! I just wondered if anyone else had come across the same problem!

and you were right! turning off the eq did the trick!

i have an audiophile mate who swears by 24bit i'm a newb regards to rockbox and i want to convert him!

THANK YOU!

Then you shouldn't be using rockbox. We only do 16 bit, and I doubt many of the players we run on can do more anyway. Also, rockbox will downsample everything to 44.1kHz.

I have the same problem with my ipod mini. With eq on, no matter what type of eq, it kept skipping every few seconds of playing flac, with eq off, it's fine. It happened to my ipod classic on apple firmware, some of the songs buzzed annoyingly, with eq off, its ok, till I hard reset it and reinstall the os, then it seems ok. Weird!

How many bands of the EQ are actually enabled when you have it "on", MikeyL?

If eq makes songs skip you're probably doing something weird like turning on a lot of unnecessary bands.

I know, it just saves you the hassle of re-encoding everything at 44.1kHz, most of my flacs are 44.1kHz.

I don't have £500 to spend on a high end media player ...

So i am more than happy! Incredibly impressed that rockbox plays these files at all!

Personally i am glad to have left the land of mp3, i'd rather listen to a chrome cassette!  ::)

Spot on, using less bands solves the problem! Plays fine when using only 3 bands,  :D

thanks soap & saratoga

And that's a valid point,

but just a single time setting up a Foobar2000 (or other media player) "convert" action with your Rockbox device as the destination drive and you can "copy" said high-res files over exactly as fast as you can from the file browser since your CPU is assuredly capable of converting dozens of times faster than your Rockbox device's HDD can write.

Thanks for the pointer, i've never used foobar200, looks like serious software!

it'll make a change from dboweramp ...

i tried it on a mac, but there were no settings in the flac encoder to change the bit depth and sample rate

it just re-encoded it to 24bit 96kHz !  vlc on my android couldn't play it  :o (falling about in hysterical laughter)

it's really not important, it was more of an experiment to see if they would play, you need superhuman hearing to notice much difference from 44.1kHz,

Vivo X1 anyone? what a joke! first dr dre beats phones now "audiophile" androids!!! it will never end . . . .

Thank god for Rockbox it ROCKS!

Yea, my bad.

You'll have to turn the resampler on.

Sorry about that.  You'll save significant storage and battery, though.
