Ipod Classic Accessory docking stations
« on: May 12, 2013, 12:32:31 PM »
hello

like rockbox on my 160G Ipod classic.
Works on my boose docking station

BUT WONT WORK any more on my iLuv iMM178 docking station alarm clock (no jack in line)
Cant wake up or sleep without this clock

Must I revert back to Apple's firmware !!?

Willing to test debug or whaterver if there is a chance to have my clock work

I have a similar problem with my Pure Contour which is a bit of a bind as I can't boot into the original firmware. I checked my Cambridge Audio iD100 dock (which is a digital out DAC type dock) and sound is produced and I have limited control with the remote so I'm happy enough with that.

The iPod Classic is absolutely not expected to work correctly with iPod accessories.

The iPod Accessory Protocol is not implemented for this port, neither is serial, so how on earth you have even limited playback control confounds me.

Well, I've just tested it and I can confirm that I'm certainly able to skip forwards/backwards through tracks and to pause resume with the dock's wireless remote whilst using the RockBox firmware!
For the record it's actually a Cambridge Audio iD50 dock http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/products/id50-premium-docking-station and I have a 240GB 5th Gen iPod with RockBox 3.13 installed.
I appreciate that my player is a 5th Gen and not one of the so-called (or poorly named) 6th or 7th Gen 'Classics'

Well...that changes things dramatically.

I made the assumption (which, as it turns out was incorrect) that because you commented on this particular thread that, same as OP, you had an iPod Classic (which in the Rockbox world refers only to 6/7G iPod).

The iPod Accessory Protocol and serial most definitely *are* implemented for the iPod 5G (which is an iPod Video), and you most certainly can expect at least partial functionality with most accessories. IAP support is a bit spotty (its entirely reverse engineered), but we do have a list on the wiki of accessories that are known to be functional here.

At least now I can stop scratching my head wondering how on earth it was possible that you had dock playback control on a Rockboxed iPod Classic - safe in the knowledge that the world is right and miracles don't exist (at least not in iPod form). :)

My sincerest apologies.
I have a 7th Gen Classic (that I did try RockBox on once) as well as my RockBoxed 5th Gen and, what with the pointless labeling of the 6th & 7th gens as being 'Classic' (when they are very, very, similar to the 5th gen when you take them apart), I still can't come to terms with the 'what ought to be described as 'A Classic' in the true sense of the word' 5th gen not actually being a Classic yet the modern ones being described so (if you get me) - even the Wiki page calls Gens 1 to 5.5 as Classics, though the Apple site doesn't. Of course, if I remember correctly, there is a school of thought that reckon the Classics shouldn't actually be referred to as 6th or 7th Gen, but I shall try to get it right next time  :).

I wholeheartedly agree that the naming conventions are confusing as Hell.

Wikipedia is at least partly to blame for this mess I'm sure.

I would prefer it if they simply stuck with the "generations" naming scheme:

iPod 1/2/3/4/5G
iPod Mini 1/2G
iPod Nano 1/2/3/4/5/6G
iPod Touch 1/2/3/4G
etc.

But the iPod Classic came and messed that all up by clearly being part of the "iPod" (as in, non-Mini, non-Nano, non-Touch family) by getting its own handle, but by starting at generation 6 (another reason why it is clearly part of the "iPod" family).

Why oh why was this not:

iPod 6/7G
or
iPod Classic 1/2G...? We'll never know.

I certainly don't blame you for being confused. :)

Anyway, back the OP's problem, and hopefully my related Pure Contour problem.
For me, I can drop my RockBoxed 5th gen into the Pure Contour's dock and it sits there cycling between 'Connecting, 'No iPod' and 'Waiting', and with no sound (even though the iPod is playing). The iPod does go into last track resume which seems to indicate that it's detecting that it's got power (and the screen brightens, and it charges) but it's never detected like it did when I could use my it's original firmware (the ability to boot into the Apple firmware has unrelatedly 'gone away again' ). There was a moment of hope when I pressed the Pure's 'return/back' button and the iPod went into 'USB Keypad mode' which indicates some form of communication between the devices but still no sound or ability to control. FYI It still working fine in my Cambridge Audio DAC/Dock.
