Clip Zip: Shuffle always plays the same tracks in same order
« on: May 06, 2013, 05:07:19 AM »
Sansa Clip Zip, Rockbox 3.13

I use a playlist with shuffle mode. I  would expect that after starting the player it would continue with the last song played and randomly chooses others after that. Instead each time when I start the player it plays the same sequence of songs, always starting with exactly the same song  :-\

If I turn off shuffle and then re-enable it I get a different sequence. But each time after starting the player that same new sequence is played.

So after starting the player I need to either skip dozens of titles to get far enough into the sequence to get "new" titles or I need to disable and re-enable shuffle.
Is this a bug or is there a switch to get the expected behavior? It worked fine with a previous release on a Sansa Clip+.

It is working as intended.  The playlist is shuffled once, and then played.  When you turn off and turn back on it resumes the playlist it was previosuly playing.

There is an option to reshuffle the playlist (in the context menu IIRC).

It sounds as if he's saying the playlist does not resume where it previously left off at poweroff.  OP, can you please clarify as to whether this is what you mean?  Also, what happens when you power off and then resume from playing a *non*-shuffled playlist - does it still begin at the beginning of the playlist, or does it resume correctly where you left off?

That is correct, it always starts with the same title. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have noticed it. And there is no difference if I pause playback and then power off or just power off while a title is still playing.
After power on it starts with the same title it started with the last time and not with the title that was playing when the device was powered off.

Same with a non-shuffled playlist, just checked it. I set shuffle to off, loaded a new playlist, played a few titles, powered off. After power on the very first title of the playlist started playing, not the one that was playing while powering off.

I misunderstood then, sorry.  I haven't experienced this myself, how are yoou powering off?  Manually, or through e.g. idle or sleep power off.

I power of manually. And it makes no difference if I pause/stop playback first and then power off or if I power off while playing.

If it working correctly it resumes last track played and track position.

I had problems while developing theme when the fonts took too much memory.

It seem to have a hierarchy of failure.
1. looses track position and starts the track over.
2. looses track and starts playlist at the top.
3. looses last playlist and can resume.
4. Can't load M3U playlist but can create and load a dynamic playlist.
5. The FM radio theme doesn't load.

I would try a different theme....cabbieV2.

FYI. I think this is a legitimate bug.

I can have the same problem that the OP reported, depending on what build I use: when the playlist is shuffled, it is started again from the beginning after a shut-off. This happens whether the playlist is fairly large (more than 800 tracks) or fairly small (fewer than 40), or whether multiple folders are involved or only one. It does not seem to matter what theme, either: I usually use lebellium_Samsung-like_ABE now, but I switched back to runner_96x96, which I used to use all the time: the problem occurs with both themes.

I have some history with this problem: on January 9, 2013, I installed the latest daily build (62de15f-130103). In the next day or so, I noticed the problem. (I use my MP3 player mostly at work, and because of the nature of my job, I shut it off and turn it back on frequently through the day. That makes the problem quickly noticeable and very annoying.) I re-installed the daily build I had been using previously, from December 12, 2012 (6f47b29-121216): no problem.

The other day, I upgraded to the stable release (3.13). The problem returned, so I went back to the December 12th build: problem gone.

I have the same problem here.  I'm using a Clip Zip purely as an aid to getting to sleep and have the playlist set to Shuffle and the Sleep option set to 45 minutes.  But each night it starts again at the same song as it started on the previous night.

ELCore says that build 6f47b29-121216 works for him. Is there somewhere I can download this build from to see if it works for me?
