long select click / short select click is to quick

my parents and other non-techie users seem to have a very hard time with a "quick click" . im talking about the middle button on the ipod while a song is playing for example... is it possible to make a normal quick click not jump to the special menu so quickly? i know we are talking about micro/millaseconds here but the average non technical user does not seem the get it even after you show it to them 20 times. they all hold the button down a millasecond longer then necessary taking them to the special menu instead of the song select menu. is it possible to change this or add an option of how long a "long click" is in milla seconds?
if i could i would code it myself (i cant unfortunately), thanks for your time and consideration devs.
