H120 SD card upgrade issues

I'm trying to upgrade my H120 to 32GB using:

- an IDE to CF adapter
- a CF/SD adapter, which is basically a CF card into which is inserted an SD card
- a Sandisk 32GB Class 4 SDHC card
- a Fujifilm 512MB SD card for testing

I upgraded the H120 bootloader to V7 pre 4, copied Rockbox 3.13 to the Fujifilm 512MB SD card along with a single music folder.  Fitted it all together and it booted up fine and plays music files fine.

However, when I tried the same using the 32GB Sandisk card it boots up fine, but has all sorts of issues while running Rockbox, including:

- System freeze
- 'Unable to access playlist control file' error when trying to play an mp3 - this follows a long period of loading a track
- 'No partition found' error
- Very slow menu navigation

The player can write to the 32GB card as I tried changing a couple of settings e.g. no icons, and these were remembered when re-booted.

The fact that all seems to work well with the smaller card suggests that the problem is probably with the 32GB SD card, but am hesitant to shell out for another without knowing if there might be a way round the issues.

I tried re-formatting using Fat32 formatting software rather than the standard Windows formatter, but still the same.

I did see a thread by someone using a Toshiba 16G class 4 with a slightly different set-up i.e. an IDE to SD card adapter, with no problems, so maybe using a Toshiba card makes sense.

- Is there an issue with using higher capacity cards?
- Would it be worth trying a different cluster size other than the default?  Would it be better to go for bigger or smaller cluster size?
- Are there any Rockbox settings to try which might help?
- Any other suggestions?

I reaslise its probably not good practice to reply to your own post, but i just wondered if any of the issues i have described above may be helped by flashing Rockbox to the player rather than running it off the SD card?

Me again. Tried a 16gb class 10 card which worked fine. The 32gb is a class 4. I didn't think it would matter that much as its audio not video, but i suppose it is running the o/s. So i've ordered a 32gb class 10. Fingers crossed.

I still wonder if flashing Rockbox to the player might make sense in taking some of the work away from the SD card. Any thoughts?

Just thought I'd update on this.  Fitted a Class 10 32GB SDHC card, only a relatively cheap unbranded one, and it works flawlessly.  Super fast, great battery life, silent operation which makes recording with the internal mic an option, and more storage.  Total cost of the mod £26.91.

Only slight issue I found with the set-up was that when setting it up, disconnecting and re-connecting a few times, on occasion the card was not seen giving a 'No partition found' error.  This was rectified by just re-reading the card on the computer using a card reader.  Good thing is that when its connected and working it carries on working with no errors, its only when its disconnected and re-connected that it sometimes has this issue.  I didn't format the card in the player and instead used a card reader, so maybe that's the reason.

Anyway, this is a great mod and pretty good value for money.  My hard drive was still working, but 10 years old and I suspect it was only going to be a matter of time before it failed, so this is a great option to keep this great device going hopefully for many years to come.
