Multiple artists for one song are a PAIN!
« on: March 12, 2013, 08:03:48 AM »
How do Rockbox users manage when a song has more than one artist, and all the names really should be shown?

I've heard about multiple artist or album tags in one MP3, but that Rockbox can't sort through them properly.

At the moment, for any particular song, I'm listing all the artists in alphabetical order, both names each, surname last, all in one tag with a "+" separating the names. But sometimes the list can get ugly, what with one artist appearing in two different parts of the library.

Say, for example, I have a collection of songs by "Calvin Harris" with another artist featured - Since alphabetically he appears as "C", that's mostly fine - but at least one of the other artists comes before "C", meaning that poor Calvin gets second billing, simply based on the alphabet.

I could swap the artist names so that it would be "Harris,Calvin" but it wouldn't solve the problem, really.

When it comes to classical music, there really is no problem as they are all single composers (I don't feature the conductor or the soloists).

Demoscene music has the same problem as Commercial (above), except that the collaborations between groups are far more extensive.

I could yap on and on, but is shoving all the artists in one tag, alphabetically, the right way? It's a practical way, as it'd be tough to determine who participated in the song most to least.

How do other people manage?

I've had a look at the files in question, and it turns out that for those modern songs with a "feat." or "featuring" in the title, I can just cut out the secondary name.

I figure as long as one artist, the principal, is mentioned with the song title, that will be enough.
