Upgrading an IHP-140
« on: March 04, 2013, 09:26:48 AM »
I'm about to upgrade my IHP-140 with a Toshiba 240GB 1.8" MK2431GAH Hard Drive, a
2200mAh Li-pl Battery, using a T5 Torx Screwdriver and a ZIF to 1.8-inch Bilateral IDE Hard Drive Converter. If anyone has had experience doing this feel free to post your thoughts. Thanks!

afaik you need a special build of rockbox for the 240gb HD to be supported. I've got a H140, upgraded to 120GB HD and 2200mah battery.  Biggest problem was finding a ATA to ZIF connector that is small.  The one I used was a single design

This looks ideal, rather than a bulky PCB one

Thanks for the response - as far as the connector goes I'm looking at duplicating what appears here: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/ZIFToATAAdapter using the easily found dealextreme adapter.
As to a special build of Rockbox - do you have a link?

One other question - does the 120Gb drive also require a special build?

no with the 120GB works straight off. I was looking at the 240GB model but there is no pre-built rockbox build, the build for 240GB seems to be forgotten.

Also from what I read, those PCB adaptors mean removing some or all of the blue foam rubber, a short risk, and also being thicker, case won't close.

That cable adaptor looks good, I'd certainly give it a try.

You need the patched 7pre4 bootloader to use a drive bigger than 128GiB, but a normal build of Rockbox itself should be fine (I enabled LBA48 for all targets that can do it some time ago). We just can't build an updated bootloader for the iRivers because the code is broken :/

yeah that's the one I went for. Apart from IDE to ZIF adaptor, straight swop. Needs formatting to FAT32.

yeah it'll see it, just have to partition and format it. Windows doesn't format to fat32 you'll have to use a util, swiss army knife or something like that, or Linux.

Sorry to go backward but I'm confused. Is the http://corkhead.com/kr/?p=4 the ONLY hardware adapter I need to enable the connection of a ZIF HD (Samsung HS12YHA or Toshiba MK2431GAH) to an iRiver H100 or H300?  Do I need anything else in addition?
