Iriver h340 with broken HDD
« on: March 02, 2013, 11:07:31 PM »
Hi, i found my old h340 and im considering repairing it and using rockbox.
So i bought 4 things :

a new battery : http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B002TW1HD6/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
An sd-CF  adapter : http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B002F1SGDU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
A CF-IDE adapter : http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B000OCY802/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
An SDHC : http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B005793ZTW/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This has not been shiped yet, so i can cancell it if im wrong.

1/ Is this going to work , did i buy the right things ?

2/ My HDD is broken, wich means that i cant connect my h340 to my computer : i suppose i cant upgrade to rockbox, which means that the new drive will not be detected ?

Any clue on the way i should proceed to save it ?

I also found the original     MK4004GAH  : http://www.amazon.com/MK4004GAH-Toshiba-Hard-Drive/dp/B00115AJJK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362284799&sr=1-1&keywords=MK4004GAH
But its really expensive i think.

Will this work http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MW45RA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1NBQLX6KGLLV2  ?
Thanks in advance.

I have a H140, upgraded to 120GB.

Check polarity of that battery, the irivers have no polarity protection (if you read about people using wrong chargers with polarity flipped over and frying their unit) 2200mah are ok, the 2300 models are a bit too thick. I went for a 2200mah from licketysplitauctions

yeah you need a storage medium to flash your unit. I have a 40GB HD spare from my H140. Fully working (4004GAH)

Isn't the HD in the iriver 1.8" that's a 2.5" adaptor. Will it fit?

Ok thanks for your answer.
As I dont have any 1.8' spare , ill have to buy a new one : il found two 60gig quite cheap ( 26$ each on ebay), so i bought them in case one brokes. And your right, the adaptator wasnt the good one anyway.

Thx also for the warning about polarisation : if i plug the new battery the same way the old one is ( black on black, red on red), it should be ok ?

I lost the charger ( in fact, only the h340 remains, all the accesories must have be thrown away), so ill just have to stick to usb to charge it.

I'd double check with a voltage meter, some people who have used replacement batteries have found the wires to be the incorrect polarity.

I guess if you could bodge up any hard drive the H340 you can get it to work.

Isn't USB charging a bit slow? Only 500mah, compared to the 2A on my H140 charger.

Ok I think my father might have a voltage meter, ill check. Good to know !

I have some spare hard drives, but i dont have any adaptater to plug them in. I guess I'd need something like thaht, http://ghzcomputer.com/Specs/Connectors.asp?ItemCode=SATA%20TO%20IDE%20CONVERTER, but I think I will stick to the 60gig HDD for now.

Well if im corect, 500mah means that i will need 4 hours to charge a 2000 mah battery instead of 1 hour with a 2A charger ? too bad I lost it.
I cant be really sure, its hard to charge because the h340 keeps trying to find the HDD then keeps rebooting.

By the way, I just learned something new in english : to bodge up  ;D

Are you sure that's for 1.8" PATA drives?

This is what I use, allows me to fit 120GB HD into the H140

Im sure, but its because the only HDDs I have are 2'5 sata.

Ive got one HDD that could have been used with your adapter, but its broken.

are you sure? Nothing in description to state whether for 1.8" or 2.5"

This converts 1.8" to 2.5" IDE drives, different size between the two

Do you need this one?
