I don't think it's "remains" of Rockbox. As far as I understand the current state you have installed the bootloader but not Rockbox itself.

Rockbox consists of two parts: the bootloader and the main Rockbox. The latter is basically a bunch of files on the player. You need to install both for it to work. If the main binary isn't found by the bootloader (which is always started on startup of the player) it shows an error message.

Boot the player into the Sandisk firmware and connect it to the PC. Run Rockbox Utility and install the "Rockbox" part -- you don't need to install the "Bootloader" part, you already have that. After installation safely eject the player and restart it. It should now be able to run Rockbox. Make sure you select the correct mountpoint (Windows: drive letter) in Rockbox Utility's configuration. If you installed Rockbox to the wrong location before trying to detect the player is likely to pick the wrong mountpoint.

Thnx bluebrother! Fixed it.

Thinking back I probably indeed had made the (stupid) mistake to overlook the correct path to my player.
I did choose the right player model, and got no error messages, and didn't give the 'path' selection any thought at all.

Thanks for your help and fast reply!

(I can get it working into Sandisk firmware by holding 'back' button while powering on)

THANK YOU!!! :D My SanDisk Sansa Clip v2 seems to be working again now with the original firmware! All I had to do was format the Clip as FAT32, download the latest v2 firmware image from SanDisk, and hit the back button in order to get it to reboot and overwrite the ROCKbox firmware with the original firmware. If that didn't work, I was afraid that I might have to go through all of this:
