Can Rockbox's created playlists 1)use relative paths and 2)save to a custom fold
« on: February 09, 2013, 01:48:42 PM »
Hi, I'm using a Sansa Clip+ and a Sansa Clip Zip, both rockboxed.  One of my goals in managing my music collection is to keep my collection as intact as possible, including playlists, and be able to simply copy directories over between computers, between portable devices, etc. I keep most of my music on the external MicroSD card in my player, and I'd like to be able to copy music and playlists between multiple devices and still have the playlists work. (I'm willing to restrict myself to hardware and software that can play playlists which utilize relative paths).

My preferred organizational hierarchy is to have a "Playlists" folder at the root of the SD card, along with folders for "MP3", "FLAC", etc. I'd like the playlists to use .m3u or .m3u8, and to use relative paths instead of absolute ones, so that the playlists will continue to work if the directories are copied to another portable device or computer.

I'd like to modify Rockbox's behavior with Playlists in the following 2 ways:

1. Customize which folder playlists are saved to... in my case in a folder named "Playlists" at the root of the SD card.

2. Created playlists should use relative paths instead of absolute paths, so they will continue to work even when the directories are copied to new locations/devices.

Is this possible?

Thanks for any help.

Relative paths are already supported.. Take a look at the manual.

Yes, and yes.

The manual describes both of your questions.

Ok, I was able to solve the first part of my question by performing the following steps:

To designate a new folder as the location for playlists:

1. Use the File View browsing mode to navigate to the directory of your choice. (In my case, <micro sd>\Playlists
2. Long-select the directory, then choose "Playlist Catalogue"
3. Select "Set as Playlist Catalogue Directory"

I was unable to find a solution for the second part of my question, despite reading through the online manual. Would anyone be so kind as to either post or link me to instructions on how to have Rockbox create playlists which use relative paths, rather than absolute paths?

When Rockbox loads a playlist, then it will try to load the files as referenced in the playlist, but will then progressively remove the left-hand-most directory if no files are found. This means that providing you have the same directory structure on both players then you can use playlists on either player interchangeably.

Thanks for the response, but this doesn't answer my question.  Just for reference, I'm hoping to use the same directory structure and playlists across multiple devices and programs.... xbox, ps3, VLC, plugging into a friend's computer, etc.

I already knew that Rockbox can read and play playlist files which use relative paths.

I asked if Rockbox can WRITE playlists using relative paths instead of absolute paths. Two different folks responded in this thread saying "yes, read the manual". I read the manual. It's not in there. If it is, please tell me where and I will gladly apologize for missing it somehow.

Can anyone please tell me if Rockbox can write playlists using relative paths? If so, how? If it's in the manual, can you tell me the numbered section of the manual I should refer to?

No. But it's not hard to convert playlists with absolute path to relative paths. This even be done with a rather trivial plugin. Otherwise, patches are usually welcome :)
