Are there third party tools to write firmware to my iPod 7G?
« on: February 01, 2013, 12:40:58 AM »
I cannot uninstall EmCore with iTunes.
I installed Rockbox to my iPod 7G 160G.
I tried the way of http://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/EmCORE_Uninstallation and iTunes said "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the ipod, then try again."
I had tried two PC to restore my iPod, but I failed.

Does anyone know the third party tools to write ipsw to iPod?

I'm in the exact same boat.  Same iPod model.  Perhaps the emCore folks would know how to do this, since they've figured out how to write the emCore firmware onto the device?

Hi,
I have the same problem! I installed rockbox on my iPod classic 80GB, everything works fine, but now I need uninstall rockbox. I connected iPod to PC and enter DFU. But here is problem - iTunes said "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the ipod, then try again."
I tried it several times, but nothing changed. I tried all USB ports on my PC, I tried 4 genuine USB cables, I tried reboot PC, I tried Uninstall iTunes and instal it again, but always get the same error. I borrowed my sisters PC and install iTunes and try DFU - again the same problem! (on my PC is windows 7 64b, sister have windows 7 32b)
I tried different iPod 80GB (never rockboxed) and again iTunes said same error! I tryed DFU with next iPod classic 6G 160GB and same error again! Then I tried it with 7G 160GB and again same error!
Only first ipod is with rockbox, other three are with ofiginal firmware (never rockboxed) and DFU is not working!

Any ideas?

Very sorry for my english :)

SOLVED! ;)

All you need to do is uninstall iTunes and install some older version (i did it with iTunes 9.1). With old iTunes DFU and restore works 8)

Thanks!
Now My iPod is official firmware!

I found FIRMWARE.x1247.RELEASE.dfu in x12470000_Recovery.ipsw. If I had wrote this dfu file with ipoddfu.py, I might be able to restore my iPod without iTunes...?

I doesn't matter :P

Darn, didn't work out for me.  I'll try again in the next couple days on a different system.  But some questions - what OS did you use (in case that matters?)  What is the exact version of iTunes that you used?  The one I tried was 9.1.0.79 on Win XP Pro.

Thanks!

OS: Windows7 32bit SP0 (Clean Installed)
I downloaded iTunes9.1 from http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php (31 March, 2010)

I hope you find it informative.

Just popping into this thread to post a snippet of IRC logs from earlier, in the hope that it helps others who run across this issue:

Quote
[19:39:54] <redacted>    hello
[19:40:56] <redacted>    i have a problem reverting my ipod classic to original firmware after emcore r859
[19:41:33] <redacted>    i am following this guide http://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/EmCORE_Uninstallation
[19:43:02] <redacted>    when itunes detects my ipod on the last step it says "iPod detected but could not be identified. Reconnect and try again. Could not find required file."
[19:44:13] <redacted>    I tried on 2 pcs under windows7 64bit, 1 under windows7 32bit, 1 iMac. Tried to reinstall itunes, tried to create another administrator-user account - no luck
[19:44:30] <redacted>    is there anything i would try to do before go to service?
[19:58:26] <[Saint]>       noxxx: what is your iTunes version?
[20:03:46] <[Saint]>       Please revert to an older version of iTunes and try again.
[20:04:22] <[Saint]>       (Where "older" == "doesn't pre-date the launch of the device" obviously ;))
[20:07:53] <redacted>    old is what?
[20:08:17] <redacted>    i have 11.0.1.12
[20:15:59] <[Saint]>       noxxx: try 9.something I guess
[20:17:56] <redacted>    [Saint]: ok i will try and tell if it works
[20:36:20] <redacted>    [Saint]: thank you very much, iTunes 9.2.1 worked!

So, it definitely seems that iTunes version is a critical element for some users.
The question is...why?

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

ipod classic 7G

Maybe alittle late with this but, thought might be a good piece of info for anyone coming to this thread later...

So, I wished to also uninstall emcore and rockbox and bring my ipod back to it's original firmware (2.0).

After many failed attempts and much messing about with the recommended build of iTunes to perform the restore, due to the "...cannot contact..." error, I finally reinstalled the very latest at this time (11.0.2.26), and everything sorted itself out!

iTunes recognised that the ipod was in recovery; contacted the software server successfully; updated iTunes software; downloaded the restore software; and WITHOUT disconnecting my ipod, I then manually closed and restarted iTunes,  it proceeded to go through the 'normal' restore steps. Finally updating the firmware to the latest 2.01

My ipod classic 7G is functioning  at least as well as it did before the installing emCORE and Rockbox.

Hope that is of some help.
