Micro SD Card Name Recognition.
« on: January 09, 2013, 04:24:18 PM »

I have a Sansa Fuze V2. I have two cards and each have different names. When I go into the file browser the cards show up as"<microSD1>," and not the name of the card. This could be especially annoying for the people who have their files and music spread across multiple Micro SD cards for organization, and have them each named according to their content... Music, Pictures, Games, ect. Can you (the developers) add SD card name recognition to Rockbox for the devices that take SD cards?

And while we are on the topic of SD cards and Rockbox, I have another question. Could you add an SD card button on the main menu. It would just be another main menu selection, but for an SD card, and would only appear if an SD card is detected, and would display the name of the SD card currently in the player. And would disappear if there is no SD card detected. I think this would be handy, instead of going into the file browser, and sense SD cards are a big part of Sansa devices, which are a large percentage of your supported devices.

Yes, we could read the volume label on the SD card filesystem, though it'd be preferable to display it as something like <VolumeLabel - microSD1> in case the label is something unexpected, to make it clear that it still refers to the microSD card. Someone could write a patch to support that.

Or you could just have <SD_(name of card/label)>

I remember hearing somewere that some how you can edit the items in the main menu. I don't remember how, but, could, whatever method you use to do so, be used to move the SD card link to the main menu?

No. You may only edit the order of the main menu and dis-include (some) items, not include arbitrary settings from other locations in the sub-menus.

Seems to me like the shortcuts option is what you want. You can even combine this with the option to replace the quickscreen with the shortcuts menu so that shortcuts are accessible with one key press from any screen.

You could use the "name" parameter of the shortcut to rename the "<microSD1>" entry to "/sdcard"...or, whatever floats your boat.

The only way you'd actually be able to get the sdcard entry into the main menu itself would be to edit the menu structure in the source, and recompile your own build...at which point we would have to stop offering support.

Edit: Added links for all suggestions, the manual is your friend (though, I'll give you the fact that it can be cumbersome to search through when you don't know the wording of what you're looking for)

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

I think it's reasonable to expect the user to know how his SD card is named. I guess the brackets should make it clear that it's an external medium. Imho <VolumeLabel> should do.

Personally I'd prefer it if Rockbox only displayed the name of the card, without the brackets, as I've named my SD card "Music" and I'd like it to just show up as my music folder. But I can see how that would make things confusing.
