iPod 5th gen - fixed line out

Sykes:
Hey guys,

iPod 5th gen (older), RB 3.12.

I noticed when I use an external amplifier with the line-out, the output level changes with the volume control. The change isn't smooth, I think there are about 4 or 5 different levels. To use the maximum level, the volume control has to be above 1/2 or so.

Is this a feature or a bug? Is it possible to fix the line out level at maximum settings regardless of the ipod's volume setting?

Thanks.

Its just how the line out works on the Video.  If you want to be able to use the full volume range, the line out level won't be fixed for very low volume levels.

Sykes:
Bummer. Well, thanks.

Is this because Rockbox adjusts volumes at some point in the digital domain?  If so where is the transition point or is it always a blend of analog and digital domain control?

saratoga:
No its all analog.  Most DAC chips have multiple volume control stages. On the 5g one of them is inline with the mixer feeding the line out.  So short of disabling part of the volume range or I guess disabling the headphone out and volume control when a dock is inserted you have a variable line out.
