Option to switch off display during MPEG playback
« on: December 19, 2012, 03:35:44 AM »
Hello,

I've really been enjoying the MPEG playback capabilities on my Sansa Clip Zip and I was surprised to learn this was even possible on such a small device with a tiny 1.1" display.

Anyway, I've mostly been using it to watch Mystery Science Theater 3000 shows before going to sleep, and what typically happens is that I watch about 10-20mins of an episode before turning over and listening to the rest of the show until I finally fall asleep. Doing this is really starting to drain the battery fairly quickly, so I was thinking that it would be nice if I could just press and hold a button to bring up an option (similar to changing the shuffle and repeat settings during music playback) to switch the display off so I can continue listen to the audio without unnecessarily wasting battery life from powering the display.

Does this sound like something that would be possible?

That kinda defeats the purpose of the video doesn't it?
I see your point though...

Why are there so few of us who like to listen in bed, and while it's dark? Or, on an airplane and want the screen off to save the battery. TED talks are great to listen to, but you don't need to look at the video. There are loads of videos I download and convert to audio. This would cut out the hassle of conversion. I like the idea. So much so, I'm still looking for this feature on my Android ever since I've had the phone. Having the screen off saves battery and you can turn the screen on if there's a part you think is worth watching.

It's called locking the screen. I think you'll find most Android devices come with this handy feature :)

The screen actually turns off does it? And the sound keeps playing?

Yes, and yes.
(fwiw, it is a simple experiment to try, is it not?)

Yes and no for my Android device.

As for TED talks, they offer audio only downloads :)

They do. But, not for all talks. I have RSS feeds for both.

This also applies to all kind of video clips- music, etc.
It could be useful for a blind person, too. One could simply decrease brightness to 0, but this is much more elegant solution.

Hi ! My english isn't perfect but I'll try to explain myself the better I can xD
Well, I was thinking on add a new topic about something like this but here it is.
You think it could be posible add an extra option on backlight settings?, an option to keep backlight ''off'' while playing music (on WPS) and only when pressing ff, rw and volume buttons?. I think it's usefull when the player is on a pocket and we know the location of buttons, in this case we don't need the backlight on for change to next track or increase volume.  :)

Like PowerAmp does on Android Lockscreen (at least on the old ver. I saw xD)

Thanks !
