Problem installing onto iPod Color/Photo 4G

(1/1)

andyjohnson0:
Hi,

I'm new to Rockbox and am trying to install on an iPod Color/Photo 4G (160GB capacity). tldr is that I can't install the bootloader.

I verified the model of the iPod using the serial number and Apple's 'identify your ipod' page, so I am confident that it is a supported model. Before trying to install, I restored/wiped the iPod to factory defaults using iTunes. The iPod says its running firmware "1.1.2 PC"

I restarted the ipod and put it into disk mode, then connected it via usb to a pc running Windows 7. When I run the Rockbox Utility the configuration dialog appears. Autodetect failed to detect the model but did detect the mountpoint. I selected the model manually. When I try to install the software it fails to install the bootloader. I get the message "Error reading partition table - possibly not an Ipod". This is repeated three times.

I can install other parts of the software, but not the bootloader. Can anyone help me understand what might be causing this?

I have attached the log file. The iPod is named 'MY PRECIOUS' and is mounted as the F: drive, which is physical disk 1 (148.86GB FAT32 primary partition).

Things I have tried, without success:

1. Using a different pc. It didn't have iTunes installed, but it was also running Windows 7.
2. Running the installer as administrator and/or WinXP/SP3 compatibility mode.
3. Closing all explorer windows, in case the shell had some kind of lock on the usb drive. Also temporarily killed the explorer process.

I also tried manual installation, but the ipodpatcher utility could not identify the iPod.

I'd be very grateful for any assistance.

Andy

The iPod Color/Photo 4G only exists in 20/30/60GB versions. If yours is 160GB then you have an iPod Classic, which is not supported by Rockbox Utility; you will have to install manually with emCORE.

Thanks for replying. You're right, it is an iPod classic. I'm not sure how I made that mistake, but it was kind of late when I checked the Apple site.

I'll try EmCORE. The install process looks fairly straightforward.

Thanks again,

Andy
