make Rockbox place cursor on "resume playback" menu item on startup
« on: November 20, 2012, 04:00:54 PM »
(...and so I treated my Sansa to some incredible Rockbox niceness and so I've come across this edge that could use some polish:)

I'd like to recommend making "resume playback" the preselected menu item after startup to enable resuming playback by just pressing two buttons.

- When real life interferes with my dwellings in the soundscapes perceived through my DAP and I either shut down my device or pause playback and it shuts down automatically after some time, it is quite cumbersome to later navigate to "resume playback" when the DAP is buried under your clothing and/or you can't afford to use your eyes for the task...

Have a look at the manual ... there is an option for this:

I'm not proposing automatic resume of playback right after system start. I'm proposing to just put the cursor on the "resume playback" menu item. To actually start playback you would have to press [Select]. This would be an improvement because selecting a new file/playlist for playback requires you to have a look on the display anyway while resuming playback doesn't require any information flow from the device to the user and might well be used as frequently as selecting a new file or something. Automatical resume of playback introduces significant hassle in case I want to do something else than resuming playback; with just preselecting the "resume playback" menu item, introduced hassle is arguably close to zero.

Whats the difference between having to press select in order to resume playback as you propose and setting auto resume and having to press menu to go back to main menu as we have currently? 1 vs 1 button press.

Don't press [Select] after power-up..... press [Home].

If in Main Menu [Home] goes to WPS and that will start playback.
If you're not in Main Menu [Home] press will put you in Main Menu.

On most targets (those with enough buttons) just pressing play will restart playback from (nearly) wherever you are in one press.

Oh yes indeed, the "home" button. Thanks a lot! It didn't appear to me to try that one. Did I miss something in the docs?..
I guess we can mark this one as solved. Can I try to put that helpful information into the manual somehow?
("pause"/"play" button does not work because it is in use as "up" button in that situation.)
(I was just about to argue how preselecting a menu item feels cleaner than having to abort playback...)

There is also an option to reorder the main menu which would let you put "resume playback" at the top of the list which would do the same. (I could also maybe add an option to choose the initial selection).

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

It is in the manual.  What device do you have?  Maybe it is missing from that one.
