can i install without being admin?
« on: May 03, 2006, 12:28:32 PM »
ok i will be honest that i am not super intelligent about computers but i am fairly comfortable with them.  i currently have a laptop on which i am not the administrator as this laptop is issued by my school and set up the way they want it to be.  i really want rockbox for my ipod color.    i can't seem to get any of the command prompt to work from the ipodinstaller page.  please give me any advice.  thanks a ton.

i got to the step where i find ipod and i can get it to run rockbox and then when i type the ipodpatcher 1 etc.   at this point in the instructions it says "NOTE: You need administrator rights for running ipodpatcher. Either re-login as administrator, or open a command prompt running under an administrator account by using one of the "Run as" features of Windows XP."    as i explained i can not log in as the administrator as i do not have the account information.  what can i do?

Ipodpatcher must have admin rights to do the low-level stuff needed to read/write the iPod boot partition, and install the Rockbox bootloader. All you can do is find another computer where you do have admin rights.

OR..

You could just take a Windows XP disc with you to school, put it in the drive, reboot the laptop, press any key to boot from cd - and re-install windows XP on the laptop and make yourself admin. then give it back to the school and juts laugh when they can't log in. See how they like it...

of course I am kidding...

My best suggestion would be to run a  Linux Live CD (knoppix per exemple) and then follow the linux tutorial and BAM in mater of seconds you have rockbox on your Ipod :)
