(rockbox-compatible) mp3 player with unlimited external media support?
« on: October 24, 2012, 06:38:39 AM »
hey guys,

im looking for a mp3 player that supports using SD/microSD cards with no limits - i want to be able to use the largest sd/microsd available.
is there a rockbox compatible one, such as the sandisk clip+? does rockbox remove the limitations on external media?

basicalyl id like something that has more space then a ipod classic 80gb, I dont care if its flash or hdd based, just no more apple!

I use a Sandisk Sansa Fuze v2 with a 64GB micro sdxc. It was a trick to format, but it works fine now. I'd assume Rockbox doesn't limit the card capacity, as long as you can format the card to FAT32.
You could always buy an older player (like the iRiver H340 or Toshiba Gigabeat F) and replace its HDD with a higher capacity drive. If you don't mind messing with the iPod video, there is a 240GB HDD available for it. Just install Rockbox and thank Apple for the hardware while giving iTunes a kick in the backside.
As for standard SD cards, the full size SDXC goes up to 128GB, but I'm not sure which stable Rockbox targets use regular SD cards.

Rockbox should in theory support cards up to 2TB. Nobody has tested this of course since those cards don't exist yet, but if it doesn't work when they do, then it's a bug and we should be able to fix it in software.

The hardware makes no difference.

If you look on Amazon or ebay you can find several different models of SD to CF adapters.  Most of these will go up to 64gb (I suspect they will work with 128GB SD cards but haven't been tested with them).  There are also adapters that let you replace IDE hard disks with CF cards, and you should be able to combine the two adapters to replace a HD with an SD card.  iPod mini's will accept CF cards directly, and I've heard of success up to 64GB cards.  The mini's should also accept SD cards in the above mentioned adapter.

I personally have converted a Gigabeat F10 to use a 32gb CF flash card using an adapter.  Now that prices on 64GB CF cards have fallen to under $100 I may try to double the capacity of my player sometime soon.
