Clip Zip problems
« on: September 12, 2012, 05:59:02 PM »
I used Rockbox for a month or so with no problems on my Clip Zip+, but have recently had some major problems.  Here's a list:

1.  Playing music or audiobooks, I would periodically get a flashing error when starting a track.  There are several error messages, but the most common is "Data Abort at 30 FSR 0x8" followed by some other language.  The only solution has been to turn it off and restart it.  I was playing an audiobook for which this method would allow me to start the track again from the beginning and fast forward to the spot, but the last couple of days it is doing it on every track I'm playing, and is completely unusable.

2. If I delete items off the internal memory (I'm running OS Mountain Lion), it deletes the files but doesn't open up the space.  The only way I have found to reclaim the space is to erase the drive.

3.  If I load in Sandisk's OS with my Micro SD installed (Sandisk 32 gb), it will try to refresh the media, do so for a few seconds, then the screen will go black and I will have to reset.  This was a problem before I installed Rockbox, and was the main reason I installed Rockbox.  Rockbox had no problem seeing and navigating the micro SD, but now it can't play anything on it.

Any suggestion on how to troubleshoot?  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both Rockbox and the bootloader, but I haven't been able to get any of these problems solved.  I've even tried uninstalling Rockbox entirely, but I haven't had success there either.

Thanks for any advice.

Are you emptying the Trash Can after deleting the files? Unless I'm mistaken, USB devices will not reclaim the space until the deleted files have been emptied from the Trash Can.

I'm not sure this is a Rockbox issue. I had the problem I think you're describing with my Clip Zip on my first day with the device (long before ever installing Rockbox) and it was related to some of the media files I'd transferred onto the device. I'm not sure if it was a file size/type issue or a metadata issue but I was able to narrow down the issue to a specific album. Once I removed this album the Sansa OS was able to refresh the media (albeit very slowly).

When you say:

Do you mean that Rockbox is now unable to see or play any of the files on the Micro SD as well?

I'll check the trash can issue.  That would be great if that solved it!

Yes, the Rockbox is now doing the error message/reboot thing on all files that I have tried on both the MicroSD and the internal memory.  It's essentially a brick right now.  I've tried running it with the MicroSD in and out, and it produces the same result.

For now, I've gone back to my old ipod.  It is failing (which is why I bought the ClipZip) and I'm hoping to take some time with the ClipZip to see if I can try again to do a fresh install of Rockbox on the player and format the MicroSD and start over there.  Definitely a frustrating process!  That newly announced ipod nano is definitely looking more attractive, even with its high price tag!

Thanks for any advice

My advice with you problem is:

1) Format Micro SD
2) Make a fresh Rockbox install
3) Put back Data on SD

Solved

By the way, moving info on the Zip/SD will be better if you power off the device BEFORE plugging it to the PC, this solved me a lot of issues.
