Preventing multiple copies of the same song

I have found that, over the years, different albums may contain one or more of the same songs, especially decade-specific compilations. I wonder if it would be possible to create and implement a function whereby Rockbox could detect multiples songs, with the identical artist, delete one, and make the other appear in the track listing for each album that it is on. This would allow one to enjoy any individual album as it was intended, and shuffle all one's music without hearing the same song repeatedly.
I have a  Sansa Clip Zip. Since Rockbox isn't quite finished for that player yet, perhaps it could be the test-bed for this feature ;)

You're welcome to implement it in a plugin but weird stuff like this doesn't belong in the core.

If I wanted this functionality, what I'd actually do is just dump every song I've got in one out-of-the-way folder somewhere. Then I'd create the normal folder structure that would have albums in it, but use playlists of the album in place of the actual album. Since you can insert and shuffle playlists into the actively playing one, and these playlist can be made to all reference the same individual file for duplicate songs, you can create the effect you desire, and it could all be done via some clever scripting on the PC side.
