Rockbox Development > New Ports

Creative's Micro Zen

<< < (3/3)

Llorean:
Basically, the rules are simple:

1) If the device is firmware upgradable natively (the manufacture can supply firmware updates) a Rockbox port is _possible_

2) If the hardware inside the device has already been identified, it is easier.

3) If there are datasheets for most/all of the hardware, easier still.

4) If an open source compiler exists for the processor in it (identify the architecture. ARM, M68K, etc) and all the above are true, the only thing stopping a port is a couple dedicated developers.

The less of those that are true, the harder it becomes. If the first one is untrue, it's close enough to impossible to not bother in most cases. If the fourth is not true, someone needs to write a compiler first. If the third isn't true, someone needs to reverse engineer some hardware. If the second isn't true, someone needs to crack one open and get working.

hmm..  think it would be too much to ask for a separate forum specifically for "possible / prospective / future ports"?  it seems specific enough a topic to justify the distinction, and avoid cluttering up the "general discussion" area (and conversely, losing possible-port threads in the other threads here).

Llorean:
Actually, I made that request a while ago, and talked to someone, and he said "Hey, I like your idea" and since he was the proper authority, it should happen eventually. The problem is the forums are hosted yet somewhere else, and it sorta depends on that last location to change things like that. I hear word has been passed on to them, but since then nothing has changed, so I don't know if they're too busy, they never got word, or it got turned down. I'm out of the loop on that one. :)
