Thought of something useful for devices with digital out (iriver H120/140)

If digital output is enabled, replaygain is disabled
If digital output is disabled replaygain is enabled

As normally it's best to display replaygain on digital outputs due to reduction in dynamic range.

On the right track? A good idea or not?

There is nothing special about digital out. Replay gain is equally good/bad on digital as analog.

This would be really easy to do with two config files btw, one that enables digital out and disables RG and one that does the opposite
