what player would you recommend?

Serenity:
I have the Clip Zip and really enjoy it, but I don' t like the lack of a "hold" feature--I've accidentally started it up in my pocket/backpack on many occasions.  Instead, I have an 8GB Fuze v2 with a 64GB MicroSDXC card (formatted with Fat32format) as my primary player these days.

Great sound, over 60 gigs of storage and a nifty scroll wheel, all in a package the size of half a graham cracker.

Primefalcon:
what would be handy is one on the left hand menu that lists at least a couple of players being currently sol that rockbox supports

Cloffy:
It's hard to recommend something as "better" when I don't have a wide enough basis for a comparison. But I was recently looking for a new player. I read a bunch of articles and reviews and settled on Sandisk Sansa Clip+ 2GB with a 32GB microSD card. The sound is excellent (supposed to be among the very best on the market), the price is very low and the 32GB expansion gives me a plenty of space.
I do dislike a couple things about this player though - the display is hard to read when moving (I'm not sure what the technology is called, but it seems to "print" the lines of pixels relatively slowly so that the picture is perceived as distorted when moving), but is perfectly fine when not moving much or standing still :) Also, after using Creative Zen Stone which has a wonderful design of its buttons - you can feel and distinguish and press them even through rather thick clothing without them being weird - just a raised Play button with a circular controls around it - I find Clip+ to be a little less tactile, so to speak. Maybe I'll get more used to it in time :) And it is a little to easy to press the keys sometimes - I press them accidentally too often. It does have a "lock", but I don't really use it, because I haven't yet gotten used to pressing two buttons at once to lock it, which feels weird, so I don't feel like pressing that combination twice every time I want to skip a song.
But all in all - the sound quality is wonderful, price is great, microSD support is heaven-sent and rockbox turns this thing into a serious machine.
Still, I wouldn't be too surprised to find out that there is something even greater than this player out there :)

thelonely:
Get a Sansa Clip+ or Clip Zip 8GB with a 64/32GB micro SD

Good SQ, good battery life, affordable, Rock boxable

Also: get some nice headphones or ear buds, i use a Phillips SHP1900 headphone
