what player would you recommend?

I am looking for something that can hold plenty of songs, powerful, and has good battery life. cheap would be nice but i am not afraid of spending money. i do plan to put rockbox on it.

EDIT: i am handy so if i can upgrade it i am fine with that too.

That list and the associated discussion is really old (it refers to players as currently available which haven't been sold for 5+ years).

Also it's well worth looking beyond hardware that can run Rockbox firmware and considering Android devices which can run Rockbox as an application. http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/AndroidPort

You can find tablets or phones from tiny to huge and from cheap to very expensive.  You don't have to spend too much to get something with expandable storage in the form of a microSD card slot, a 1GHz or better CPU and good battery life.
