Help with RB on a Ipod Photo

Whenever my ipod is charging via AC adapter the screen stays on, without backlight,  for the duration of the charge.  I've gone through every setting imaginable cant seem to find a way to turn it off.  Is this normal behavior, and is it harmful for the screen?  I often charge overnight.
