Sansa E280 v1 not being recognized
« on: August 23, 2012, 11:05:51 AM »
after a momentary recognition.  So I can't uninstall, can't format, cant add or delete.  Database update hangs @ 25.  I can access sd card files separately when plugged into different port.  This seems to be a recurrent problem as I've read it before but no responses. I should add that when the player is plugged in it shows E and F as a drive but you can't access it.  Even if the card isn't there it still registers F:.

If I try to uninstall, it tells me that it can't detect a mountpoint.  I appreciate any help.  Thx.

Have you tried this:
Start with E280 off
Hold down <
Press Power

It should boot into the Sansa firmware. You should then be able to connect it to the PC and use Rockbox Utility to uninstall the bootloader and Rockbox.

Most definitely.  That's how I get it to recognize it momentarily.  It will then do an auto install of the rockbox drivers leaving me with being disconnected again.  Should I uninstall the RB program from the host so that it doesn't reinstall it?

That boots into the Sandisk firmware.  No rockbox at all.

?  Rockbox is a firmware for mp3 players.  Nothing is running on your PC.

Then how do I keep it in the sansa fromat?  Why is it forcing a new driver and utilizing rockbox instead of what would be the default, ie Sansa.

Also after I unplug from the host it doesn't reboot.  It registers as still being attached.  I can't shut it down with the button.  I have to open and pull battery out.  This is really difficult.

Its booting rockbox by default because thats how we designed the bootloader.  You have to push a button to get the Sandisk firmware.

Are you asking about the Sandisk firmware or Rockbox?  Also, you can always reboot the player by holding power for 30 seconds.  No need to pull the battery.

I simply want my E 280 to work.  I can't help but think that RB is the reason it is not able to be recognized.  But I can't get if off without it being recognized and it's jacked as it is.  Is there a way to dump what's on there?

Are you trying rockbox or the Sandisk firmware when "It" doesn't work?

Be specific.  Its impossible for anyone to help you if you don't explain the problem.

Both.  It definitely doesn't work in rockbox as far as recognition and occasionally will recognize the player when I hook in after booting in sansa mode.  But if I try to access the drive it hangs the entire computer.  In Sansa mode, unhooked, it doesn't register any files, so can't play.  In RB mode, unhooked it sees a small portion of what's on there.

Please, I can't believe that RB could permanently brick my player.  There has to be something.  Thx.

With the e200, one thing worth looking at is the flash chip which sometimes gets loose.

Open the battery cover (four screws IIRC), and look for a black square (a bit less than a centimetre across I believe). Push that down firmly.

No guarantees that this is actually your problem, but it does happen fairly regularly.

If the flash chip was loose would it allow me to play?  Also, I noticed while playing what's accessible on there is getting scrambled.  You pick an artist and it plays someone else.  Some artists are no longer accessible(just hangs)and some are scrambled.  Also, if relevant, I'm having an issue deleting files off the sd card separately.  I put the card in as a stand-alone and it see and pulls up the files but errrors out after a very long time.  May be un-related or I wonder if it has any thing to do with how RB writes to disk.

If storage and USB don't work right in both firmwares, its probably some kind of hardware problem.  You could check if the flash is loose, but a worn out flash chip seems more likely given that some of the files seem scrambled.

Just formated after booting in sansa mode. I didn't check the files first cause I was so excited it recognized and went through.  2 things I did before hand; I had another e280R that I can't see the screen(broke)and isn't rockboxed.  I plugged it in and it didn't see that either but I took the battery out pit it in that one unplugged it and plugged in the e280 v.1 and it saw it.  Also; and I think this is really a stretch, I changed the rip seeting back to WMA in WMP.  Not sure if that means anything.

Do I dare rockbox again?  Also, I was gonna try taking the players apart cause I have a 250 I was gonna put my 280 flash in but the screws are rusty and having a hard time unscrewing.  Any advice?

BTW I started a process of converting my WMA files to MP3 so that I could upload them to the cloud.  Amazon won't do WMA.  Should it matter what format I load on the player?  And one thing I forgot to mention is that I dragged alot of my music over but after RB did use WMP sync a couple of tims and it worked.  Could that have created issues?

The WMP rip setting has nothing to do with the problems you were having. I suspect you have a loose connection and/or failing hardware.

I would suggest using it with the Sansa firmware for a few days - if it starts acting crazy then you know the problem is the hardware. If it behaves then you can try Rockbox again.

One more thing I should add.  I also USB splitter from China in between.  Since my problems were related to the USB recognition, could that have caused some of my issues.

One thing I know is that I can't use my dock with rockbox;-(  No worky.
