Problems Installing Bootloader on Sansaclip Zip
« on: August 08, 2012, 08:28:34 AM »
Morning All,

I'm having problems installing the bootloader on a Sansaclip Zip using the utility program.

I have updated the firmware on the Zip to 1.1.20, as the original was 1.1.12.

On the "Quick Start" tab of Ulility both installation buttons are greyed out, so I can't use these.

On the "Installation" tab, I run the "install the bootloader" but I get two errors.
1. Original firmware unknown, please try another version (I have downloaded Ver 01.01.20 and point to this file)
2. Could not load C:/users/Wilson/AppData/Local/Temp/qt_temp.oM4692

Unfortunately I am not techie enough to do a manual install so am looking for a bit of advice.

ATB,
Steve.

This usually means that whatever file you provided wasn't actually a firmware for your player.  What file did you give it?

I installed Ver 01.01.20 from Sansa website.

I tried to use the following bootloader from Anythingbutipod.

sansaclipzip-01.01.20-rockbox_bootloader-120513-5f7d5b8.zip

What type of the firmware have you downloaded? You need the version for manual installation, not the installer. Plus, you don't need (nor want) to download the Rockbox bootloader manually.

I have downloaded the Rockbox Utility.

On the "Quick Start" tab, both the Complete & Minimal Icons are greyed out, so I moved to the "Installation" tab.
On the "Installation" tab I hit the "Install Bootloader", but it asks for a copy of the Sansaclip bootloader, which I point it to on my C drive, which is when it fails.

Yes, but what file did you actually give it?

I surmised from your questions, that the bootloader I supplied was incorrect, so rather than explain which bootloader I gave it, I decided to look for an alternative.

Not sure if I had the wrong bootloader, or if it wasn't actually a bootloader at all! but everything is now installed & working with a different file.

Thanks for the assistance, now off to play.

Wrong. It asks for a Sandisk firmware file, which is something completely different than the bootloader file. The bootloader will be downloaded automatically. If you downloaded a Rockbox bootloader and pointed it to that it surely doesn't recognize it.

What is the filename of the file you pointed it to?

Re: Problems Installing Bootloader on Sansa Clip Zip
« Reply #9 on: August 09, 2012, 08:08:29 PM »
Hello guys, I am having same or very similiar problem. I just bought a Sansa Clip Zip 8GB.
Version: v 01.01.20A.  I too am not an advanced programmed techie,  that appears to be required to troubleshoot RockBox etc. I was able to load Sansa player with my settings and music just like with Ipod etc, without problems.
I first changed to MSC mode in settings, and downloaded the 3 required files in Rockbox etc where I can find them.
In RB Utility, I selected my Sansa clip zip player, even though it shows as Unstable .
then I select to install bootloader in Rock Box Utility, but keep getting stuck at Prerequisites screen: To install Bootloader, need copy of Originial Sandisk Firmware Bin file?
I cannot find this file anywhere on my PC , no where in my Sandisk folder as well. How do I get past this problem, to install Rock Box??  Even tried moving all three files in rbinstall folder, to no avail. Please advise on this issue and Thanks for the help!!!

You download it from Sandisk's website.  The popup message you get asking for it contains a link to the file.

Thanks Saratoga, I had no idea you had responded until today, even though I selected the option, I was not sent a reply notification email for some reason.

Anyway, I was able to finally retrieve and download that Bin file. In RB Utility , I was shown that Bootloader and Rockbox install was a  success while my sansa zip clip was attached to PC, but after ejecting it, still did not show any sign of Rockbox in Sansa player.
So I then went to RB manual and found the below info, which is very confusing to me. Do not know what "OF" is or means??
I put the bootloader (icon shows as unrecognized windows file), mkamsboot file and 01.01.20 firmware file (online many users show problems with Rockbox and new 01.01.20 firmware, is this new firmware ok to use??) all in the rbinstall folder on my desktop, but not too sure how to do the next command line etc steps below?
Sorry for the lengthy reply, but I have installed and use many programs, but Rockbox is one of the most difficult to install for me, the only feature I need really is the Hot Crossfade feature, so I guess this all the only to get it for now, please advise. Thanks for the help!!!

2.2.3. Bootloader installation from Windows
1. Create a folder called “rbinstall” on your desktop, and then extract the OF, the
bootloader and mkamsboot into it.
2. Open a new command prompt, and navigate to the “rbinstall” folder.
3. Run mkamsboot.exe, passing the name of the OF and bootloader files that you
downloaded, in addition to a name for the output file.
Code
mkamsboot.exe clpza.bin bootloader-clipzip.sansa patched.bin
If mkamsboot.exe does not report success, then retry or abort.
4. Copy the output file (“patched.bin” in the example given above) to the root of
the device and rename it to the same name as the OF file you downloaded earlier
(“clpza.bin” above).

Even tried moving all three files in rbinstall folder, to no avail.

What three files? If you install Rockbox you have one file: Rockbox Utility. And then you need to download the Sandisk firmware file. That makes two in my book, not three.

Have you actually selected the correct mountpoint in the configuration dialog Rockbox Utility? Using manual installation is not recommended, and if you have problems like this without understanding whats happening you're likely to have problems with manual installation as well.

So I then went to RB manual and found the below info, which is very confusing to me. Do not know what "OF" is or means??

Original Firmware. It's a common abbreviation here, you should see it a lot when searching the forums. It shouldn't be used in the manual though. Still, manual installation is not intended for unexperienced users.

Sorry for the lengthy reply, but I have installed and use many programs, but Rockbox is one of the most difficult to install for me,

Rockbox is not a "normal program" you install but a replacement firmware. That means you're replacing the firmware on your device, which is a non-trivial process.

And please stop using advanced instructions without understanding why the simple ones didn't work. You can also post the system log of Rockbox Utility after you tried installing to allow easier troubleshooting (there is a menu entry Help / Troubleshooting, it's called Troubleshooting for a reason :) )

Hello Bluebrother, the 3 files I was merely referring to are the 3 files Manual says is required must download first: the OF, Bootloader, and mkamboot files. and then placed in rbinstall folder.  I tried attaching RB Utility trace Log file, as .log and .txt, but I kept getting error in forum reply, says it cannot accept format, so I just copied pasted log below.

Also Bluebrother, just not sure where all your somewhat snide remarks in reply are coming from, I am just merely asking for a little help to install Rockbox, but if you are irritated for some reason by my newbie questions, please do not feel obligated, I am sure can get some addtl help options or figure it out eventually.Tks

-I  have also selected correct mount point for my Sansa player manually which as log shows is on my F-drive , the Rockbox autoscan just will not work for me.

-Believe me , tried the  Auto install a few times, just will not work for me, so that's why was attempting a manual install, just thought being somewhat a longtime PC user, but not advanced, thought I could get it to install.

- As mentioned, I have attached the RB Utility log with this reply, and I must mention that Rockbox appears to be installed on Sansa Clip Zip after plugging into to computer, when I go into Sansa player on F drive, I show the RockBox Utility folder there, but each time I eject Sansa player from PC, and give it time to update etc, then unplug it, but Rockbox does not transfer or show up in player etc at all. So not sure why. Thanks all!!!!
