iPod 160gb Classic - excellent!
« on: August 02, 2012, 09:17:57 AM »
I purchased an iPod Classic 160gb and have just installed Rockbox onto it, battery life seems fine, audio quality is superb and it's really easy to use. Are there any bugs I should watch out for as it says it's unstable?  ::)

"stable", "unstable" and "unusable" aren't really based on number of bugs. Basically for a target to promote from "unusable" to "unstable", it has to be considered ready by developers, *and* it has to be installable using only tools from rockbox.org. To then promote to "stable", again developers have to agree it's ready, but additionally e.g. the manual must be available.

For the Classic, the main thing holding it back in "unusable" is the lack of a rockbox.org installation method.

(note that the installation package on freemyipod.org contains a rather old rockbox build, many important improvements have been made since then, so make sure you install a recent build afterwards)

Download a new build an unzip it to your player.  Alternatively, use rockbox utility and install a newer build.

It not immediately obvious where one might actually get an updated build for the Classic from, as it isn't offered via the release/development builds page(s). So, here:

rockbox-ipod6g.zip

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Hi,
I've been using the version from freemyipod.org for a while, and I'm pretty happy with it except for the occasional usb freeze ups.  I thought I'd give this version a try, but after installing it, usb doesn't seem to work at all.  A "Removable device" appears in My Computer when connected, but no files are visible.

I was able to restore the freemyipod version by rebooting to the Rockbox fallback image from the boot menu, but I would still like to try a newer build.  Any pointers?

Thanks

Hi guys

The Rockbox site refers to the EmCore release here for Classic 6g:

http://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/EmCORE_Releases/r859

Is this release different from the link you've provided?

Sadly the emcore version crashes very often on playing.  Maybe someone knows a tip to get it to work better?

Thanks

Oh wait, this is a much newer version - thanks for posting the link.

Very intuitive - it detects the new version and asks ... reboot ? Wonderful!

Thanks

I installed the latest release linked by Saint. Before that was using the one at freemyipod. So far it has been excellent, the older release hung twice while building up the database however the new one is working fine. Currently I've put barely 40 songs. Going to put in more now as the ipod no longer hangs up while building database files. Will try experiment with as many song formats as possible.

The problems I am facing is that the battery is now draining a bit fast that it was earlier, so lowered the LCD brightness to compensate. I directly copied 320 kbps mp3's which I had. Would playing these be more taxing on the battery than the apple's AAC format files ?

Secondly rockbox doesn't seem to differentiate the charging from a wall charger to that of the USB charging. If you don't hold any button while plugging the wall charger in it goes into USB connect mode. Not an issue really, just saying.

I am really thankful for rockbox as nothing like having a hell lot of formats to play in the ipod directly plus the ease of drag and drop with the original filenames intact. Simple things are better. Will try to contribute as much as I can in detailed feedbacks.

Hi There

Thanks for proving this link.  How do you know if the file is updated i.e. a new version is released?

Its not possible to tell from the link alone.

That link is updated everytime there is a new commit to git, that is, several times per day.
