Dutchi Merengue:
does anyone at least know the steps to doing it with the cowon m5/x5? maybe if i do the steps required for that one i can somehow patch the original m3 firmware, can anyone help?

wodz:
M3 is rather rare hardware. Try to catch amicon on IRC - he might know.

The manual actually has the answer you're looking for:

Installing the bootloader

The Iaudio M3 has a built-in bootloader which performs the firmware update and can also access the hard drive via USB. The Rockbox bootloader can therefore be very minimalistic, as it does not require its own USB mode. This makes it less dangerous to install the Rockbox bootloader as you can always restore it using the Iaudio bootloader.

Note: The Rockbox bootloader overwrites the original firmware, making it impossible to dual-boot.

^^ I think at one point there was a way to hack dual booting on the X5, although its not mentioned in the manual.  The OP is probably looking for something similar on the M3.
