Sansa Clip+ with Rockbox 3.11.2 Freeze on USB
« on: July 04, 2012, 10:01:51 PM »
I recently was using Rockbox 3.10, which had no USB compatibility. I updated to version 3.11.2, and was curious about whether it would perform any differently when plugged into USB. Perhaps I should have read up a bit more before doing that.

I plugged the player into my computer while it was booted into Rockbox, and it immediately detected that it was connected, and a giant image of a USB plug appeared on the player screen. My computer checked for drivers and failed. I figured that I'd just have to continue using the OF, so I unplugged the player from my computer.

The problem is the giant USB picture remained, and the player is completely unresponsive. I can't turn it off or anything. Plugging it back in and unplugging does nothing. Is it bricked? If I wait for it to discharge will it reset? Is there some sort of key combo to do a reset? The manual doesn't mention anything about that.

I appreciate any help

Oh wow, I'm so sorry about this, but I played around with the keys to try finding a reset combo. Home+power did the trick.

Any mods let me know if you want to delete this posting, or go right ahead, but it may be useful if anyone else has the same problem.

Exactly the same!

How can I get rid of it? I can no longer connect my RockBoxed 3.11.2 Sansa Clip+ to my computer!  :(
Any idea?

Anyway, thx in advance!  :)

Greetings from South Africa

It just happened to me as well:

Unplug device
Hold power button in for 30s
Device switches off
Switch on
Go to disc settings
Directory cache yes

Works fine now

I have the exact same problem. Works fine, plug in to computer, freezes immediately, have to reset manually. Meanwhile I'm ruining my battery by constantly turning it on and off.
I have tried having it turned off, plugging into the computer, then on, it froze anyway. In my computer it shows up as a blank device. I also went to disk settings (Settings -> General Settings -> System -> Disk), my memory cache is on.
I don't know my Rockbox version because the Rockbox utility can't access because it freezes immediately. On the Rockbox info all I get is Version: 85a6715-120815, no idea what version that translates into.

Even though no one replied I should mention that at this point my Clip Zip is pretty much ruined. I'm going to return it and hopefully get a new one.

What do you mean "ruined"?

Most of the times it freezes as soon as it's plugged into the computer, on rare occasions it doesn't freeze, but it displays an error message that flashes 3 or 4 times before simply going off and not turning on again (have to hard reset). And on very rare occasions it gets connected, doesn't crash, doesn't freeze, but it's recognized as an empty USB drive (both the Clip Zip and the microSDHC). This happens on multipled USB ports on 2 computers, one running Windows 7 64 bit the other XP 32 bit.
I really regret installing Rockbox at this moment, because the Roxkbox utility won't even recognize the device, so I can't uninstall it.
EDIT: when I say hard reset I mean pressing the power button for 10 seconds.

Right now it gets recognized, I open the drives and they both have their files, but if I run a media player like Mediamonkey it won't recognize any of the music in there, even though I used Mediamonkey to get my files in there. It also tells me I need to format the microSDHC drive, but I can access all the files in it.
I'm going to download the Rockbox utility and just remove Rockbox if I can.

Uninstalling rockbox does not involve connecting your player to USB while inside of rockbox.  If you want to go back to the sandisk firmware, you should check out the uninstall directions in the manual.

The Rockbox utility said it had finished uninstalling. Now I turn my player on and it says 'Firmware not found'. Great.
The rockbox utility had a button saying uninstall, how can it be that that is not the correct way to uninstall? If it shouldn't be done by the RU then why is the option available on RU? I'm going to try and get a refund on this player, but I'll probably have to end up buying a new one.

Uninstalled, re-installed, still nothing. The drives are recognized, I can see the files in them, but through any media player they are empty.

I'm guessing you uninstalled rockbox but not the bootloader.  If you go back and uninstall the bootloader from the Sandisk firmware it'll go back to normal.  Alternatively, the manual uninstall is actually easier, so you could just do that.

You should uninstall rockbox first, or they're going to know you modded your player and can refuse to take it back.

I don't quite understand what's up, but it seems to be ok now. It was weird on my Win7 laptop, the music didn't appear through MediaMonkey, today it did. On my XP machine it also works. My only concern now is that the battery holds less charge from all the plugging and unplugging.

The current USB driver is buggy, and works better on some devices then others.

I think I have fallen into the same issue with my clip v2. I comment in case some clever developer can get from this some useful hints.

I wanted to use my player attached to the aux input of my car stereo in "car adapter mode", therefore I have enabled the car adapter function, and the resume playing feature at the same time. The idea was to attach a cigarette lighter power supply to the player, which would have woken up the player when turning on the car (apparently the hardest feature to find on whatever other player...), and then thank to the car adapter mode gently shut down when the car was turned off.

What happens instead is that when I turn on the car, the device sticks with the rockbox splash screen showing a message "loading firmware not found", then after a few seconds goes automatically to the "bootloader USB mode", then when removing power a thrilling panic message appears.

*PANIC*
Unhandeld masked IRQ 03: INT_USB (status0x00000008)

then pressing play resumes playing normally.

The strange bit is that there seems to be some kind of timeout, meaning if you turn off the player and re-attach it in a short delay (I'd say less than 2 mins), the thing does not happen, and it just resumes playing normally.

My feeling is that due to the unstable power supply when attaching the player, the bootloader may detect a false keypress of the "upload firmware mode" (power+left if I remember well). If that assumption is true, a solution could be to add some delay time (0.5 sec?) before doing the check for the keypress in the bootloader - but this is just a guess, and there's obviously people more skilled than me out there who have done this wonderful job of porting rockbox even on my really cheap music player - thank you all for this (still hope someone can work on this bug)!
