Odd problem after uninstallation

This is on a Sansa clip v1

After uninstalling rockbox using the rockbox utility and flashing the OFW, the original Sansa UI is all there but slightly faded, and in darker letters I can see "bootloader USB mode" overlapping across the center.  I reformatted the player but the issue remains.  Everything is fully functional, but the UI looks like an absolute mess with the overlapping.  What am I missing here?
