Is rockbox supposed to display Ogg album art?
« on: June 07, 2012, 04:08:33 PM »
Hello, my really nice Fuze+ doesn't seem to display any album art embedded in the file tag of Ogg files. Works fine with mp3 though.
Is this the expected behaviour? I'm not really sure if it's a supported feature or not, otherwise I'll file a bug.

P.S. files are tagged with Easytag.

Thanks!

I see Rockbox decodes jpeg album art on every metadata format but Vorbis... is there really some kind of technical difficulty preventing this feature from being implemented, or is it only waiting for someone to do it?

Someone to do it.  Well that and jpeg in vorbis is only semi-standardized, so its probably a little more complicated to figure out how other software does it.

There is one thing that makes it more complicated: album art in Ogg files is base64-encoded... For MP3 and MP4 it is just a plain JPEG image embedded in the file.

Sooo.. is this going to get done or this issue is forgotten? Don't get me wrong but this is kind of frustrating to me because for my device i encode everything into higher quality vorbis which sounds significantly better than 320 kbps mp3, but for individual songs from different albums that i stack up in one folder i have to use mp3 format because of the cover art, and i hate it.. yes i'm anal like that :-[

As noted above, it will happen when someone takes an interest in doing it.

I love that album art is more important than sound quality for a device that you spend more time listening to than looking at...

There are other means to provide album art than via tags. Use one of those.

Nothing has changed since the last time you posted here, I'm afraid.

If you are that passionate about this, I would suggest that you are the ideal person to implement it.

Serious question: Can I ask what it is that is problematic about using one of the (many) file based options for album art display Rockbox offers?

A lot of tagging software can be configured to do this (create file based as well as embedded art) for you automatically.

Check the manual: http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-sansafuzeplus/rockbox-buildap3.html#x19-372000C

It may not be as elegant as embedded art, but choice 3 might work well for you. Then you can have your multi-artist folder of .ogg files and the art that goes with them. The catch is you'd have to rename the cover art based on the artist/title in the files' tags.

I've done this for a few of my weird files (I also have a folder named "Random" for one-off singles and rips) and it works nicely.
